Temperature Light

Featured Replies

My temp light comes on accompanied by a high pitched squeak x 3. I have checked it for water and its ok but my temp gauge hardly ever works, light goes off if you restart the engine but can flash all the way during driving. Engine management light comes on now and again as well. 2001 Fabia Comfort 1.4. Any ideas?. Garage could not find anything wrong regards to engine management light. Car is driving ok.

Does this happen after starting up on a cold (freezing) morning?

If so it's a warning light to tell you that the coolant is cold. As you say, after driving for a bit, switching off and on again curses the 'fault' as the coolant has reached a temperature within standard operating ranges.

You might want to take a look at this as it sounds like your coolant temperature sensor is on its last legs.

As regards the beeps, the coolant level sensors can be quite unreliable, and show low levels even when there's plenty in the tank. The 'normal' alarm level should be when there's about 2" left in the bottom of the tank (as I found out on my wife's car!), so anything about that is probably a fault.

An out-of-range reading (genuine or spurious) will show as a temperature light and alarm, and as has been said, once you drive for a bit and the coolant heats up (and expands) the level rises to a point where the sensor can detect it again.

Topping up to near the MAX mark when cold is often enough (worked for me!), however the sensor is embedded in the expansion tank, so the whole thing would need to be replaced if that doesn't work. That'd unfortunately require draining the coolant, so if you have to go to those lengths, you might as well replace the thermostat housing at the same time, as well as the coolant temperature sensor. Sounds like a lot of work, but should only cost you 60 quid or so for the parts from the dealer, or less if you go online. It's all pretty easy DIY stuff, and a good search on here should get you instructions for the jobs I've not covered in the link above!

Hi. My 1.4 (Y reg) needed a new temperature sensor about a year ago. The sympton became worse so that eventually it would set off OK, but if I stopped, the engine thought it was starting from cold, so flooded it and wouldn't start for ages. Aside from the lights, have you monitored what the engine temp gauge is doing? Have you had a competent Skoda garage look at it as I think it can also be the housing as well as the sensor itself (though apparently they come together/complete if replaced by a garage).

I'm not an expert so just my own experience.

Edit: Just coincided with Ap0gee -my hero, so listen to him in preference to moi :)
