Why do engines rattle/clatter at start up?

Featured Replies

Simple general question really. Is there anything more complicated than waiting for enough lubrication to get back round the working parts or time for the mating pieces to warm up and "fill" theirs space?

What's usually up in an engine that doesn't quieten down once its warmed up?

lack of oil , especially where hydraulic tappets are involved

worn engine parts , big ends, small ends , piston slap, timing chain/tensioner fault

I was hoping you'd reply :)

Mind if I PM you something? Not my car but its one that makes clatters when warm - short engine changed to no avail. I was just interested to find out why they do that.
