PC memory question

Featured Replies

I wish to upgrade my PC's memory and wondered if I could fit 2 x 2Gb cards into my motherboard to replace the currrent pair of 512Mb ones. the PC is running Vista (32) and is straining a bit with 'only' 1Gb RAM

I've done some scans and it has a Foxconn 946 7MA Series motherboard with 2 x PCI memory slots. It has an intel Core2 processor running at 2.4Ghz max.

It currently has 2 x 512Mb DDR PC2-5300 memory cards.

I've seen some cards on Fleabay but just wondered if I would fry the PC by fitting them, and if i really need 4Gb memory anyway?

Would I notice a vast difference by fitting 2Gb instead?

4GB 667 DDR2 PC2-5300 Dual Channel Kit 2*2GB DDR PC RAM on eBay, also, Memory, Desktop PC Components, Computing (end time 21-Feb-08 22:24:46 GMT)

A quick Google says it will take 4Gb RAM maximum and they look like the correct ones.

Vista will definitely benefit from 2Gb RAM over the 1Gb but I'm not sure how much difference the extra 2 will make. That said, the more RAM in your PC the better!!

And for 50 quid why not get 4Gb?

Don’t forget the Ready boost option too. It’s not memory fast, but it is a lot quicker than a HDD. It has made quite a difference to my laptop.

I didn't notice a difference on my desktop - maybe because I have 1.5Gb RAM and it was a cheap flash drive!

I’ve got 2gb Ram but it made a huge difference:thumbup:. The flash card needs to be one of the newer fast ‘Ready-Boost’ enabled ones. Over here Costco are doing 4gb San Disc ones for around £16 I think

Nice :) Worth a go first then.

Downgrade to XP and all your problems will go away :P

if you fit 4gb vista will probably only see 3gb of it anyway due to 32bit memory allocation or something.

but yeah it would definitly gain from having more memory :)

also buy memory from a shop rather than ebay i'd say ;)

Unless you plan to run Vista 64 in the future 4 Gb is a bit of a waste.

Moving from 1Gb to 2gb makes a huge difference to Vista. That might be enough for you.

Ebuyer does some cheap memory. Personally I always take branded memory with lifetime warranty Crucial, Kingston, Corsair are all good. I don't bother with the l33t gamer memory. All silly heat sinks and lights for double the price.

Thanks to everyone. I've gone and ordered 4Gb of Crucial memory (thanks Fatty5000) as the postage was free, and most other sites' 4Gb kits had sold oot!

I will report back upon the results.

Got me 4Gb of Ram in today and must say I'm rather impressed. Boot up time is quicker, and apps start up lightening fast. played a bit of Half Life 2 tonight and it was a lot better than with the 1 Gb.

Vista recognises 3.5 Gb so not too bad, and the vista search windows are a lot faster as well.

All in all a worthy £50 spent I reckon.
