Just about to sell and the engine lights come on - HELP!!

Featured Replies

Hi All

Just about to trade the SEAT Ibiza Cupra T (55 plate) in for the vRS and the damn engine light has come on. A month or so ago the EPC light briefly showed also but went away. The engine light is on, and isn't flashing.

I topped up the oil after the engine light came on, think was running slightly low.

I checked all the lights worked ok and the brake lights especially.

The temp gauge doesn't spat around and there's no unusual noise from the engine bay.

Turbo still sounds ok and all seems to be running ok, no loss of power etc.

I don't have access to a VAG and SEAT are quoting £75+ vat p/hr to just check the fault out.

It is due a service (last serviced july 2006) and has been for a while.

I can state the brakes need a change and the exhaust is a bit blowy but as trading on not sorting. Could these affect?

It is just on a shade below 20k mileage wise.

Any thoughts really soon would really go down a treat. Even if its things to talk about and look knowledgeable when I approach the/a garage!!

Many thanks,

Karen

If you were near me in Devon I could scan it with vagcom. There's not much else you can do but check the reason why the CEL is on. :)

Thankyou for the offer devonutopia.

You could check the VAG-COM owners map. I am sure that someone must be close by.

Sometimes the EPC light will go off after so many 'cycles' of turning the engine on and off again, especially if it's only logged an intermittant fault. So try that first as at least it's free. And I mean quite a lot of times!

My EPC light came on, believe it or not, as I was actually driving my MK4 Golf 1.8t to the dealer to chop it in for my vRS! Unbelievable! Dealer didn't bat an eyelid though - doesn't cost them anything to run a scan on the ECU and 'clear' the fault, they can then sell the car on and if the light comes on again the new owner will have to make a claim on their warranty.

Whereabouts do you live, I've got a full Vagcom lead too :)

just pull the bulb out and have done with it:D

thats not really helping is it Gary , especially as its an LED

Ok, this is a little embarracing - I have done the tests again and it appears the BRAKE lights are NOT working.

I must have been having a really bad day when I went throught the testing the other day.

Can someone help me work out where to go from here please? I think it must be that that is causing the engine light to come on.

I can't find the manual, can't find the fusebox to see if there's a fuse blown and don't know which bulbs are actually the brakes.

Pretty please (with sugar icing and cherrys) can someone help me work this through?! I don't want to drive it with no brakes as we must've been doing since the light came on...

When brake pressed top light does not come on and none of the lights get brighter. This is why I would 'logically' suspect a fuse or something rather than an individual bulb.

Cheeeeeeers all.

At the original point, while It might not make the same difference to how the car runs as it could with some carburetor cars, the blowing exhaust could be the cause of the EMS fault.

Over at the brakes, the brake system is all hydraulic (with electronic addons in the case of an ABS system), so the car's brakes will work; it'll just be the lights that don't!

:);):D:thumbup:

Thanks so much everyone for all your help - in particular VRStu who helped out with his VAG-COM and knowledge.

I have now replaced my brake light switch and the brake lights are now working in fine fettle.

For info - apparently there were no usual symptoms on the VAG-COM I had to go with a hunch in the end.

My advice on this subject would be not to try fixing the switch for the sake of less than a tenner its just not worth it imho.
