What year, mine was a 2001 and was glad to see the back of it.

wud be better off with the pd100

I'd go TDI if I were you. Even the 1.4 TDI feels more lively than the 16v.

so take it the petrol version aint no good thens?

underpowerd?

thanks so far ppl.

Nooooo not petrol it must be TDi

1.2 12v petrol over 1.4 petrol any day.

1.4s are riddled with problems.

Advising derv is very true much better, but not to sure what your insurance would be like, i'm 20 like you and insuring a diesel goes through the roof so may have to stick with petrol??

I am very happy with my 1.4 16v. It has plenty of power for my needs. Mine is an '04 plate.

Big thing is to make sure it's the BBZ engine code, as the earlier ones can suffer from piston ring problems which are expensive to rectify.

EDIT: I see you're on the Wirral... I'm in Birkenvegas. Can take you out for a spin on the M53 if you want to see what kind of pull it has.

i had a 2000 1.4 16v for 12 months,had a lot of problems with it.then i bought my self a brand new mk 1 1.2 12v 2 years ago,it's alot beter engine and cheap to insure !!

also it's a lot quicker from standstill, seem to take ages for the gas pedal to talk to the engine in the 1.4 !!

What sort of driving do you do? I've never driven a 1.2, a 1.4 in either 8v, or 16v variant, or any other Fabia apart from the vRS, so I'm clearly not qualified to recommend what to go for, but what works for one person won't necessarily work for you.

I'm not trying to have a go at the people that have already kindly offered you advice either (before anyone starts), it's just that this thread seems a little like the blind leading the blind at the moment...........

Sorry if I offended anyone.

lucky dude! wish i could manage that one.

I have had a 1.4 16v 100bhp AUB engine for 3 years now, and can offer the following:

1. Piston rings are an issue with some engines, I have no oil consumption probs although car is 8 yrs old with 72k, and a lot of town driving.

2. Fly by wire takes some getting used to, there is a momentary lag from foot down to engine responding, although you do eventually learn to cope with it.

3. The engine loves to rev big style, which doesn't suit everyone, but to get the best out of it you need to work within 4k - 6k revs. It will happily do this, but mpg takes a hit, and it really should be run on super unleaded (ouch).

4. Despite what the diesel converts will say, it is always going to be quieter and smoother, but the pay off is at the pumps.
