PS3 , can it play PS2 games

Featured Replies

i'm buying a PS3 on Monday , 40gb one , but i heard that it doesn't play PS2 games , is this right ? is there a software download available so i can play them ?

is there any other info i need to know regarding the PS3 compared to PS2 ?

Its only the 20gb,60gb and 80gb ones that are backwards compatible, dont know if any giggery pokery can sort it though, sorry.

yes, the new 40Gb one is lacking a few things including backwards compatibility. although the 60Gb one doesn't play all PS2 games either, so it's a bit hit and miss.

I didn't know there was an 80Gb model.

i think the 80gb is a jap model.

Just been googling, the 80Gb is to replace the 60Gb as a new "deluxe" model, and the 60Gb will be discontinued when stocks run out.

Allegedly the 80Gb model won't be able to play as many PS2 games as the original 60Gb model bizarrely.

i think sony have already said that they wont be releasing the 80gb ones over here .. we may get another model though but i dont think they will include backwards compatibility though as they have taken that part out of the ps3 to make it cheaper .they may however do it though software emulation ..

I thought it was only thr 60gb that was backwards compat.

To be honest i really dont use ps3 i think they are crap. love you xbox 360 just think its loads better

60 gigs sold out just before Christmas, there were some on e-bay & Amazon but for silly money

You can upgrade the 40 to a 60 drive or add an external drive BUT it needs extra software to run the older games & I dont know where that can be obtained if at all. Beware as some on flea bay are aparently doing this

Sony told me something new is due this year for the UK but wouldnt elaborate

80 gigs can be found on flea bay through Hong Kong but not sure if they can play the old games

i think sony have already said that they wont be releasing the 80gb ones over here .. we may get another model though but i dont think they will include backwards compatibility though as they have taken that part out of the ps3 to make it cheaper .they may however do it though software emulation ..

the uk 60gb ones did it all in software anyway, its only the jap 60gb ones that had hardware emulation in them :)

Sony have published a list of compatible games:

PLAYSTATION3

It's balls that they took the Emotion engine (PS2 CPU) out in favour of some clunky software emulation. I would have paid the extra £50 or whatever just to have it in the PS3.

Never mine, I have the Wii for retro gaming via the virtual console.
