Mph/1000rpm in 5th ?

Featured Replies

Anyone know the actual top gear mph/1000rpm on the 4x4.

I have a road test of the vRS and that's approx 24mph (ie 96 at 4000rpm), but I think the 4x4 is about 22 ie 88mph.

Any ideas ?

I can only tell you it's 148kph at 4000rpm on 5th (just measured) so you get 37kph/1000rpm

Thanks for that - but when you say 'just measured' , I guess that's from the speedo ?

I'm trying to find out the actual gearing so that I can work out how inaccurate the speed shown is.

From previous cars, I'd expect it to over-read by 5mph (8kmh) at 70mph. The best car I had was an Audi A4 (1mph over) and the worst was 7mph over

From my GPS readings the inaccuracy is about 10% (so 80 on the speedo reads as ~72 on GPS).

This is on a 1.6, but I'd imagine it's probably the speedo components would be standard across

the range.

My car seems very 'undergeared' I'd reckon about 21 mph per 1000 rpm in fifth, and that's on the cars own instruments so in reality it may be even lower! So even 70 is pushing towards 3500.

Talking of speedos, anyone noticed they read while travelling backwards :p !!!

Paul

My SLXi 1.8T = around 24mph/1000 as well. The 1.6 may well be lower geared than the 1.8Ts. Don't forget tyre sizes make a difference too - even the "equivalent" aspect ratio on a bigger wheel is often up to 1/2 inch different in diameter from the standard size. For a real test, use or borrow a GPS, Fabpreza.

I've grown to quite like the "undergearing" - by comparison to

other cars which cruise at lower revs it is far more responsive

and more driveable. Good for when it's busy with lots of lane

changing, though if it's the middle of the night in the left hand

lane all the way, it is a bit noisy

I'm not sure I want to know how you found out the speedo reads

while travelling backwards! ;)

I was wondering if anyone would ask how I found out the speedo works in reverse! Certainly the low gearing means there reasonable performance available in top gear (well reasonable for a 1.6 anyway). But you see I'm just an old scinflint trying to maximise my fuel consumption so I make a better return on my company mileage allowance. I know a diesel would have been the best bet for that ......but there was nothing available in my price range when I was buying. Still I've averaged 37.3mpg over the last 2800 miles which is not that bad. :)

My Octy thats just gone used to cruise 90 mph for 3000 RPM. When driving for economy (which tended to be most of the time, we used to get abround 500 miles out of a full tank, around town. On a good run (ie holiday) the best I achieved was 750 miles out of the tank (which is about 65 mpg).

My new Superb does 70 at 2100 rpm, but havent done further checks as it only has 35 miles so far on the clock.

Oh yea, the Octy was a 98 GLXI TDI 90 estate, and the Superb is a TDI 130 Comfort.

Cheers.

But you must have a hell of a crick in your neck by now!

You can tell it's Friday afternoon, we're starting to see the funny side of things. Now then, how did that Goon Show song go....."I'm walking backwards to Chrsitmas, across the Irish Sea!!!" :D :D :D showing my age again;)

Yeah, aren't we all! ;)

Reset my trip computer after the last service, think my average

is, er, about 30.7mpg. When I drive without putting the boot

in I get somewhere around 40mpg, but driving round town,

really knocks it down, what with all those traffic lights

Ouch, I get 30 mpg driving my VW Transporter, which is 2.5tdi, and auto and air con on with a mix of motorway and London driving.

Do you have some very large bubble gum attatched to your foot and pedal/floor?

Cheers

Glad you said that Rob :D - I too don't seem to have the brilliant consumption figures that others seem to. I know that my regular morning trip is only 15 minutes but it is almost all motorway and I am lucky to get 30 mpg (i.e. only if I am in a particularly mellow / dozy mood). I do longer trips most weekends of about 200 miles but these are usually with four people in the car & full boot and even though most of this is on motorways, and I I am not gunning it, I get about 35mpg. Maybe I am heavy footed (damn those Caterpillar boots) but I don't get brilliant figures from the vRS - although i am quite happy with them and they are much better than several friends with less pokey older cars.

My (optimistic) trip computer reports 33.8 mpg over the last 1900 miles since the last reset. Nearly all of this is motorway or A roads. On a very good day taking it easy I can average 37 (by the aforementioned optimistic device) over my 80 mile commute. I make it a goal to try and achieve 35 for every trip by the end of the journey - this morning I only managed 33.7 :(

My average is 30.93mpg over the last 3200 miles. If anything the fuel consumption is increasing rather than improving. I had expected better but total mileage is still only a tadge over 5000 in 12 months. grumpy.gif

As a recent 4x4 (to be remapped) owner I'm very impressed by the MPG. I've really caned it on the last tank and still have 27.5mpg (34 on the last).

That compares with 26mpg in the Impreza when driven fairly gently and an average of 35.5 from my A4 V6 TDi Quattro (chipped) over 45000m.

If I can average over 30 once it has 210-220h bhp I'll be more than happy !

Anyway, my thread, so what about the TRUE mph/1000rpm in 5th on the 4x4 ?!

If you really want a shock set the computer display to read the instantaneous figure. You'll see just how bad it is when you're running in heavy traffic. You'll also see a huge difference in cold start (frosty morning) and cold start (mild morning). When you're at cruising speed it's amazing to see how the consumption varies at apparently steady speed just by altering the pedal pressure slightly. Because I really am a boring old fart!:( I record the fuel I put into the car, and check this against the computer and find the two figures quite comparable. I'm off to watch the Dulux dry!!!

Paul

That is the best way to check your mpg. Brim it every fill and work out the consuption from there. Just remember to use that spring loaded air release valve thats on the left side of the filler neck (it pushes back) so as to release the air quicker and more efficiently when filling. I always brim my motors this way and the most I achieved in the Octy was 56l.

This is a VW thing, by the way not just Skoda.

Cheers

ps By the way, my Superb was doing 32 at 1000 rpm in 5th.

True 5th gear MPH per 1000rpm for a 4x4 ?

-------------------------------------------------------

ANYONE ?! Any advances on 22mph/1000rpm (the vRs is longer geared at 24.3/1000rpm - Autocar)

Looks like the answer will have to await a 4X4 owner with a GPS receiver logging some figures. (I may be able to do so this weekend).

In the good old days Motor used to publish the gearing of cars tested in full road tests. Does anyone know if Autocar has done a full road test of a 4X4 and published similar figures?

I have most car road tests (back to the early 80's) but only three on the 4x4 - What Car, Auto Express and a brief drive in Autocar. None of these give the top gear mph unfortunately.

Its a minor thing to be honest but is useful to know your true speed when the speedo says, say - 85mph and you're not sure if the unmarked car you've passed has you down at 84mph or 77mph !

Have to say that I'm more and more impressed with the Octavia - I've had 14 4x4 cars (not offroaders) over the years - (recently including new A4 quattros, Subaru Impreza and Legacy) and with a 210bhp'ish remap I can see this being one of the best all-rounders, even after a week's ownership.

Just replaced the front speakers (see other thread re vRS) which has made a noticeable difference.

Do you know if there is a 4x4 or 4x4 Turbo grille badge available ?

I was in France when the 4x4 first came out (before the UK) and could swear they had one fitted ?

Diesel car have the 1000rpm per mph in the listings at the back. The trouble is for you that the 4x4 isnt available here in diesel form.

Cheers

Hmm...well, I have Caterpillar shoes, so maybe there is something in that ;)

My journey to work involves going 3 miles to the motorway

(takes 15-45 mins - bad for fuel economy!).

Then I get on the motorway for about 8 miles, and due to

the previous delay I get a bit of a shift on.

Then I get to crawl through into another town centre. So I think that

explains ~30mpg!

On the plus side, Coventry to Stockport this week I managed to get

49mpg on the M6 stretch, think it was closer to 48 by the time I got

home though. :D
