Tow bar or ARB ?

Featured Replies

Settle an arguement folks;

My mate reckons fitting a tow bar provides the same handling benefits of a rear ARB but a lot cheaper and of course you can then tow a trailer or a caravan()

Discuss please.

a tow bar might help with the stifness of the body so be acting a little like a strut brace at the back of the car ...but will do nothing to act like an ARB

Tell Him to take more of his medication ;)

Plus You cant have a towbar on a vrs, end of story :D

HAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

I find that funny by the way....

:rofl::rofl::rofl::rofl: Quality :thumbup:

Thats my next investment a ARB for the car, but not going be for a while, just taxed the car and need a tyre soon!

You can, you just can't legally use it for towing anything! Perhaps it might be useful to rest your foot on if you're changing your shoes with the boot open?

It wont even do that as the mounting are behind the suspension pick up points.

I guess he doesn't work for Maclaren or Prodrive ?? ;)

I've just fitted the rear ARB to my estate and it makes a difference on that, and getting towbar fitted on Tuesday so will let you know if it makes any further difference to the handling ;)

To be fair, I doubt it & as mentioned on the vRS a towbar cannot be used to tow anything (not type approved) - guess you could use it as a bike rack or something..

So I can't get a tow bar for the vRS? I had wanted to tow a jetski with it.

type approved? What's that then?

Unlike the rest of the Fabia range, SkodaAuto have not submitted the Fabia vRS for type approval for towing. If you check the vehicle data plate inside the front LH wing, you will see that the stated figure for towing is 0 kg; and there are no published figures in the Technical Data booklet for permissible trailer load, trailer braked/unbraked. The effect of Skoda's decision is that the Fabia vRS cannot be used for towing, nor could any insurance company offer you cover to do so. If you do fit a tow bar, I would guess that would invalidate any warranty on body, suspension, brakes, and transmission for starters.

The following document explains type approval.

Ah nuts!

but thanks chief.

hi b1ackb1rd -

hope you was`nt suggesting it might be better to have a towbar instead

of an arb as it was cheaper -

what the hell are you going to attach the rear wheels too -

must be like the old song - :rock_band two wheels on my wagon and i`m still rolling along -

You lot are a bunch of scallywags :)

Seriously, the guy in question has a PD100 combi the same as mine, HE reckons fitting a tow bar has tamed the rear end a great deal.

After having a few problems recently which have been temp solved with a paving slab in the boot, I'm after a more hi-tech solution.

Tow bar would be ideal - but will it work?

Towbar fitted to my estate today, fitted rear ARB again on Sunday - towbar meet naff all difference, other than adding ability to tow :P

I'd say that was pretty conclusive evidence ?

Cheers.

you lot have me worried and annoyed now!

When i bought my vRS it had a towbar fitted, as previous owners decided to tick it as an option. I got Skoda to remove it FOC though as I didnt want it...and it proved to be an utter mission for them, which was funny....but why offer a towbar on a car that isnt permitted to tow anything?!

sorry for the joke -

if you are having problems with your rear arb , putting a towbar on the back wont make a scrap of difference - you do not say what issues you are having -

if its sqweeks and knocks coming from that quarter , might just need the bushes changing taking that everything else is alright - they dont last for ever

swapped mine over a few months back , no noises atall now -

hope it all works out

Mine has a removable towbar  I have had an ARB fitted and i'm very impressed with it

I'm sure this is an urban myth or one of those stories told to unsuspecting "juniors" or customers "up their own Rse!" as a feck off comment.

It's utter bolox!

J.

Do you think this myth has grown from the knowledge that a roll cage stiffens the body shell and hence improves the suspensions performance? Ppl then look at a tow bar as a lump of metal that looks like it might do something similar, as it is also a tube of metal that they think is cross bracing the back of the car???

I’m getting a towbar fitted to my 1 series next week and don’t expect any improvement in handling, although I expect people might not park so close to my back end.:D
