70,000 miles and just starting to get clutch slip

Featured Replies

damn it! the clutch in my vrs has just started slipping as I'm approaching the 70,000 mile mark!

Does anyone know how much the cost of parts and labour are? And, is it a straightforward job to do yourself - or is it a nightmare and best left to a garage?

BTW, just wanna say thanks to everyone on the forum who has posted lots of useful information. I rarely have anything to post, but read the forum daily, and find it a superb resource! Cheers guys!!

Is the car remapped or standard? Either way I'd say it's an opportunity to fit an uprated clutch for no more money. Do a search for Skidmissile's thread for when he did his DIY clutch fit. Not for the faint hearted. :)

cheers for the reply mate.

it's not been remapped, just a standard badger! I'll have a looook for skudmissle's thread then...

any idea on costs?

Standard clutch circa £650,

Uprated one, circa£1k,

Dogs Danglies one, circa £1.2k.

I seem to remember the upgraded clutch costing around the £500 mark, have a lookin in the Jabba sport section or groupbuys section as thats where I saw it.

Mine gave a couple of slips the other day once in 6th and the other in 3rd (which its never done before) 71K remapped for 60k so I guess its not done too bad really!

My prices are for fitting as well, I will need one soon, so have started to look about for the best quotes, from reputable places.

If I can make mine last until August, I will be trying to find £1.5k for its clutch, 40k service & mot as well:eek:

No holiday for me this year:(

man looks like i'm just gonna have to bite the bullet and pay someone to do it then! Need two front tyres as well. As you say grumpy, no hols this year:)

I fitted a crappy quentin and hazel clutch to my ol' man's rover 214 two years ago just for the price of the clutch (£50). (Hardly a realistic comparison to the vrs clutch i know:))

However, I'm not liking the look of this job!

Maybe an excuse to upgrade...

haha, my clutch swap was awesome :D

My clutch cost me £550 from awesome gti. sarah did a right good for me and get the clutch to me in a couple of days

Not actually that bad on the vrs, the main problem i had was manuvering the heafty 6 speeder about to get it back on the engine.

Now i am back in the garage doing a DIY turbo swap/DIY FMIC/ DIY repair after stupid concrete block episode , might look for a job as a mad mechanic one day

P,S if going down the Sach route, budget for a new DMF @ around £250.

I asked about this, and as mine has been mapped for the last 30k miles or so, it would be false economy not to fit a new one, so......

I might as well bite the bullet and get an smf helix one ( I can stand the rattle in neutral! )

it will be able to handle all I can abuse it with, and will give me an excuse NOT to change the car, as I was going to...

hhhmmmm mine made 80,000 miles with thousands of learners driving it, and my clutch still felt like new!

have you tried the "be violent a couple of times" approach? can't remember the thread, (or what words to dsearch for it!) but a few people have cleared their clutch slip, by giving it some reall sharp engagement in first......

apparently if driven very gently they can "glaze", much as brakes can, given this treatment, they can sometimes go back to normal (mine got this treatment often as a learner car....)

grumpy: I know you drive yours like you stole it anyway ;) but you're running higher power and torque right?

Just a bit....

Mine is approx 180 bhp, and I haven't a clue how many torques it has:confused:

OT, but, my clutch is nearing the top of its travel, and sometimes makes a 'sproing' noise, which I presume are the springs in the dmf complaining.

It has never slipped, but I treat it gently-ish anyway, and would sooner replace it than be towed in one day, as I need it every day really, and don't want the hassle of having it off the road for longer than needed.

Once I have got the funds together, I will try to kill it properly ( having said that, the mad wife has been driving it today, and she is of the 'drive it like it's stolen' fraternity, and makes me wince...)
