Oil be dammed

Featured Replies

Ok, I really didn't wanna have to do this BUT I have searched, and searched and searched ALL oil threads and I still dont have a definative answer.

Basically, I was scurrying around yesterday trying to find some VW505.01 top up oil for my 54 Furb vRS. The VW garage was open and the oil I needed was on the shelf BUT because the service dept had left for the day they could not sell me a bottle (yep, ridiculous huh?). It was Abridge VW in Harlow if anyones interested.

SO, I popped to a Skoda dealer and they pretty much said the same thing BUT the sales guys there gave me a bottle of Shell Helix Ultra VX 5W-30, out of "courtesy" cheers fellas:thumbup:

Now here's the thing. On the reverse of this bottle it clearly states that its suitable for VW507 00, 506 01, 506 00, 505 01, 505 00, 504 00, 503 00 and 502 00

So, it states that I can use it for 505 01. However, heres what confuses me. ALL threads I have read state that the furb vRS requires 505 01 (5W-40).

This bottle is 505 01 (5W-30)??

Does it matter that its 5W-30 and not 5W-40??

So, put me out of my misery, can I use it or not, if not/so why?

Ta

technically no.

in practice I would have tipped it in by now.

look out for the opie oils threads... they will explain it.

Cheers for the speedy reply.

Is that "technically no" it doesn't matter if I use it, or "technically no" I shouldn't use it:confused:

Anyone?

Its the correct spec, so its up to the job, but its not ideal mixing different viscosity oils.

it depends really on when your next service is, a couple of thousand miles? then pop it in, as its better than running the car very low.

But if the car has just been serviced i would try and get some 5w-40.

That'll do for me, cheers.

Its fine mate, looks like shells version of VW504/507 which cover allVAG specs.

Guy.

That's the shell longlife stuff for modern engines.

As oilman says you will be fine with it. That plus your dealer just gave you £15 :)
