Insurance + De-cats.

Featured Replies

Has anyone had problems or mad premium rises from 'fessing up to a de-cat?

I'm thinking of going down this route (after I speak ro a m8 who works for the Ministry of Transport and does roadside checks ;)).

Just for the record I'm with Chris Knot.

No doubt their assuming your going to be a bit of a boy racer and therefore a higher risk to insure.

You'll have no problem on a diesel. I declared the full turbo back decat system on the Scooby and all the insurance company wanted to know was if it increased performance more than 10% (which it clearly didn't!). I don't think the premium changed as a result, despite the mod technically making the car unroadworthy!

you will have to tell them but I can't see it being a problem at all to be covered for it

If it's de-catted surely it's illegal to drive on a road?

It is not illegal to decat a diesel car and it won't fail the MOT emissions test.

I've just spoken with big Dave who works for the D.O.T. and checks emissions/noise at 'Police STOP' laybys.

1) De-cat is legal on a diesel, providing it passes the smoke (NOT emissions) test.

2) Subjective* the Tester must not detect a 'discernable' increase in noise over an OEM set-up.

3) I'm 'avin' one!

:P

PS. Numberplates with any quirky logo strip at the side are technically illegal (apart from a UK country or universal EU emblem).
