Fuel Consumption

Featured Replies

I fitted some HID to my fabia the other day and when i went on a long journey to norwich the other day i used about half a tank to do 260 ish miles averaging about 56mpg on the way there and back.

I dunno if it is just me but i think it uses more fuel with them fitted, what do you think?

was it cold when you did the journey ?

depending on the road, traffic, weather etc , i don't think those figures are too bad ,

how could bulbs change you fuel consumption anyway

By using more electricity and putting more load on the alternator?

what HID did you fit?

do you get glare?

No it does not use more fuel.

The engine turns and delivers a constant output to certain components. Having the lights on, Stereo on does not affect fuel consumption, it is a fallacy. I stand to be corrected of course but the only way i can see an increase in fuel consumption is if you are putting a greater demand on the electrical system than normal and the ECU tells the engine to compensate for this with higher revs. Most cars i know idle slower when a demanding electrical load is placed on them so........................................... maybe your right. :o

Where is the power load for the electrical system from.....the alternator.

My fab vRS will idle at the same revs and if I put the blower on full and all the lights, the engine will momenterily dip and then go back to 900rpm but with more demand on the alternator.

You will use more fuel if there is a high demand for power all the time, the power for the lights etc will add up to a fair bit and it's not the battery that provides it.

The alternator will take over as soon as the car is started, the battery is there for starting etc only IIRC.

just wait till you get your electric bill......:D

No it isn't.

If you are using extra energy to power the lights and other electrical items then this has to come from somewhere. If it didn't come from the engine then you'd be able to run the lights with the engine off forever.

It may not make a huge difference to fuel consumption , but it is there.

You can work it out if you really want to as the wattage of the various bulbs is known , and so is the power output of the car

my vrs is booked in at skoda as i could not achieve more than 35 mpg on a good run it was down at 28 and i was going easy with it to get good fuel figures.......last night i went out and drove it normaly and i managed 48 mpg :o

Whats going on fabia

I was under the impression that although HID's require a higher load to "start up" once running the current draw is lower as they are more efficient than standard lights.

So if anything you should see improved mpg with HID's.

In reality the effect will be so small and other driving variables large that i doubt you will notice a difference you can attribute to the HID

you could see better and other cars could see you coming, so moved out your way. so you drove faster, and so used more fuel! or, you had a head wind!

I seem to remember posting on a similar thread a few years ago. HID elements consume about 35W each IIRC, compared to the 55W consumed by halogen lamps. Therefore, your consumption should be a gnat's chuff lower. Having said that, dipped beam (halogen or HID) + tail lights + sidelights + interior lighting adds up to less than 200W on a car that pumps out nearly 500 times that, so I doubt the results would even be measurable, given all the other variables that would come into play, like driving style, environmental conditions, fuel spec etc. etc.

It's certainly nothing to lose sleep over!

I've read some daft threads but this....

Unless you have got a problem with the way they have been put in (And it would be a big problem) it will make no difference to your FC. Not even your A/C would give you that much of an issue. Standard HIDS run at 35 watts as oppsed to 55 watts for standard halogens. You could work out the overall consumption and draw on the system but there is no point, it will be negligable

You could have had a duff tank, it could have been a cold run, your air filter could be a bit clogged, your tyres could be a bit flat, the list is endless.

I would seriously dispute the validity of your computer if your getting a 56mpg average, You just wont get it in the real world, do you brim the tank to check the real fuel economy?

Funnily enough this happened to me last week. An outward journey of 40 miles showed me averaging approx 44 mpg (headwind) and the return journey (same road, approx same speed etc) approx 53 mpg (tailwind)

Sorr for being thick but whats HID & IIRC stand for?

HID - High Intensity Discharge

IIRC - If I recall correctly

I no wat you are saying about other factors but 56mpg aint impossible on a long journey i wouldnt have thought sticking to like 60-70mph all the way

what kit have you fitted to yours?

I've fitted a HID kit to mine, complete with D2R bulbs with "black out" spots on the bulbs to reduce glare, and the glare is still silly.

I park up in front of a wall and although the dipped beam pattern is clearly visible, it doesnt cut off and the wall is still lit all the way to the top all over the place, when I drive down a coountry lane the top of the trees is lit up

ive had them aligned so its not that.

I've been flashed a couple of times, theyve been in about 2 months, so cant be that bad for other drivers

thinking about taking them out though

help appreciated

I just have ones i got off ebay they are 6k came with the bulbs etc

yes i no wat you mean mate i think it is because we dont have the projector lights (well i dont) you can see the beam pattern on the floor in front of the car but not on like a wall etc but i never get flashed and the old bill have never said anything.

i have them adjusted all the way down on the little adjuster thingy so they are not in others faces but they do make a huge dif
