Fabia glove box broken

Featured Replies

Hi,

Me again.

Apart from my power steering going and the alternator being dodgy, the catch on the glove box has broken and I can no longer get into it!

There is absolutely no resistance when I pull the catch leading me to think that if I pull it hard enough, it will simply snap, rather than open the glove box.

I've tried levering it open but there is an air bag located somewhere nearby so I don't want to accidentally trigger that!

I accept that the glove box door will inevitably break when a garage gets into it but I'm wondering if this is something I'm better off getting the service centre at the Skoda dealer to do, as surely it will be them who has to order in a new part and fit it?

Anyone got any idea what this might cost?

Cheers.

Hello Borosnowy,

The lid closes by two clips which slot into the interior part of the box (which starts about 40mm in from sides of outside lid). The clips are like mini door latches, protruding about 10mm. I guess that this means that the pull open lever must be a simple lever pulling the r/h catch with an offset rod to the l/h one and a spring holding it in the closed position. If I'm right, you should be able to drill a small hole in the lid to the right of the opener and then insert a thin screwdriver. Pressing this against the rod and moving the rod to the left should be enough to open it. Once open you can repair from the inside and put a plug or badge over the small hole you drilled.

Before you go that far, maybe you should try taking out your stereo (search in here for instructions if you need help), and seeing if you can push the latch in from the other side...?

I would use a hole saw to access and release the latch rods, the lid can then be quite easily removed by prising out the two hinge pins. I wouldn't have thought a new lid would be all that expensive.

Thanks everyone - the car is going back to the service centre in relation to another prob but I think I'll try and tackle this one myself using your advice and save some cash!

Look here picture two, this will give you access to the retaining bolt, push it in and you will have one side open, a little bit of play will drop the right hand side and glove box will now be open, then work from there
