Just Bought a Fabia, Few Questions Answering.

Featured Replies

Hi.

Well my mum and dad just bought a 2003 Fabia 1.4 MPI. Few little things first. The car has done 13k with full Skoda history.

Now the tickover seems alittle jumpy and you can feel its alittle jumpy on tickover.

Also, When you have it in neutral with the clutch out you can hear a slight which sounds like gears turning like cogs. Now i know all cars do this, Just never heard it before on any of a VW cars.

Just wanting to know if this is normal.

Thanks

Luke

Low milage car for the year points to a possible build up of dirt/carbon deposits in the throttle body.

Thats what we was thinking. We put some Redex in, And i think we are going to give it an engine flush and oil change. An old woman has had it from new since 2003 and doing 13k in it. Its like new, So we gave it a spin up the motorway.

Its lumpy on tickover because the 1.4 8v is an old engine which they have cut back on fueling to meet modern emitions requirements will probably feel like its going to stall but doesnt.

a hard thrashing and a service will clear the spiders out anyway :D

Deffo need a good hard drive. But the tickover isnt slow nor does feel like its going to stall. It just seems to be jumpy and it will tickover normal then the revs will go down and back up, As if the car is misfiring sort of feeling, But it isnt as it revs very clean up to 5k, Could just be carbon build up.

Sounds normal for the 8v.

yep my car does the same thing everytime i start up idles just under 1000rpm but it goes up and down abit in the revs then steadys out! its fine when its warmed up and im guessing the cog noise is because of the chain, my is abit rattly at times

8v is lumpy at idle.

Mine did this from 6000 miles right through to 96000.

At 30,000 it got really bad and Skoda replaced the camshaft sensor which helped but never cured it.

hi there, even though im new on this thought id have a crack at anserin ur question, well the 1.4 mpi we had a little bit of a problem like that too. it used to jump a lil while stoppped at lights etc, took it to dm kieth they replaced somthing under the warrenty (this was a bit ago) think it was a sensor of some sort. it was ook for a bit maybe a day or 2 and then it started the same problem again, slowly

Seems like normal then as a few people's cars are doing the same thing. I know the 1.4 8V is an old engine but it seems a smooth and quite engine compared to there VW Bora 1.6.

The cog/gear noise isnt from the chain, Its from the clutch, As soon as you push the clutch in its fine, Am not sure if the noise is normal, But other than the noise the clutch is fine.

Same here when I first turn the Key it goes to 1000rpm and then when I drive away and stop at the next junction it idles around 800rpm on average but I was thinking is this to high?

I am sure it used to idle at 500rpm and has just gone up to 800rpm recently.

I was also thinking could this be causing extra petrol consumption? I sit in a lot of traffic everyday with the car idling away and was wondering if the higher the idle the more fuel I use and is there a way to bring the idle back down.

I am sure it used to idle at 500rpm and has just gone up to 800rpm recently.

800rpm sounds ok, 500 too low. We have an Arosa 1.4 8v (which I'm sure is essentially the same engine) and it idles around 750rpm.

Our Arosa was running a bit lumpy - whipped off the air filter and the throttle body did have carbon deposits/grime in - a few sprays of Wynns cleaner, plus a bottle of Wynns injector cleaner through in a tank of fuel and it is running very well now.

Worth a go as the cleaners etc only came to <£10.

Cheers

Stu

You could always pop th air-con on (assuming yours has it fitted) that'll increase the rpm at idle when cold, however, it'll also decrease your MPG.
