VRS estate VS Saloon

Featured Replies

How much slower is the estate than the saloon ? (Petrol that is)

How much extra does the Estate weigh and is it signficantly worse for MPG ?

Is the load space in the estate signficantly better than the saloon ? I've owned the VRS saloon before so relise it's a big boot.

Cheers chaps :)

I'd don't think there's a difference in terms of performance at all as the extra weight is minimal. In fact I dare say the variation in the weight of the driver would make more of a difference!

In terms of space I don't think floor space is any different (could be wrong) since the estate isn't any longer than the saloon but obviously you can load it higher.

Cheers,

went to see and audi A4 Avant S line 2.0TFSI yesteday, nice with all the toys but 48k miles on an 05 plate. Guy will take £13625 for it, but it felt a bit heavy and slow compared to my old Octy II VRS with the same engine and gearbox.

The audi is definitley nicer inside, but I could get a very low mileage VRS estate in silver with a number of extras for £12k on an 06 plate

I looked at A4s before I got my VRs but there isn't as much room in the rear or in the boot plus the saloon of the A4 makes access more difficult.

Is the A4 the same 200bhp engine, or is it a lower powered variant?? It may also feel slower as the sound proofing is much better :)

Have to say, the 2.0TFSI Octy vRS is stunning value for money! :D

yes it's the same engine, 197 bhp.

The Audi was very nice inside, but I agree less spacious.

Maybe it was the sound proofing making the avant seem quieter.

I'd be tempted by the audi if there was more evidence with respect to how well the TFSI copes with big mileages. I'll probably do 50k miles over the next three years as I'm opting out of the company car scheme so whatever I buy will be my main workhorse and our family wagon.

I'm not sure how reliable the audi would be when approaching 100k miles ?

why are people still obsessed with this figure of 100k?????? car engines have come on leap and bounds in terms of how well parts are machined (accuracy).

why do you assume I mean the engine ?

What about the gear box, Dual Mass flywheel, electronics etc, etc

By opting out I lose the peace of mind of 'whatever goes wrong - someone else pays'

What's going to be worth more in four years,

the audi avant s line with leather and other toys on an 05 with 98k miles

or

an 06 octavia vrs estate with 56k miles ?

Finger in the wind, I'd say the Octavia, just. Wont be much in it for sure I wouldn't think.

what do you reackon the octy would be worth,... £5k ?

That sort of ball park for sure. I've just bought an 06 vRS on a 5 year deal, if its worth £4k when its paid for I'll be over the moon, although it will have more like 120k on it :)

What sort of APR % did they offer ?

Here we go again Tom eh?

You are slightly madder than a very mad person.

Buy a house you fool:rolleyes:

yeah them 2.

Dual mass flywheel - fairly high fail rate I believe and expensive to repair ? not certain though.

I don't know the tfsi costs, but for the tdi, a new gearbox s £3200 and the dual mass flywheel £800.

Given the petrol gearbox does not need to cope with diesel forces, i would guess that replacements would be a little bit cheaper.

Manufacturer's figures: (2.0 FSI-T)

Hatchback: Vmax 149 mph, 0-62 mph 7.3 s, 35.8 mpg, 188 g/km CO2

Estate: Vmax 147mph, 0-62mph 7.5 s , 35.8 mpg, 188g/km CO2

Hatchback: 1470 kg kerb weight

Estate: 1485 kg kerb weight

(or equivalent to just 15 Litres of fuel, but bear in mind the extra weight is ALL over the back wheels - this is probably a good thing for handling sensitivity as the hatch is biased nose heavy, especially in the larger engines and diesels)

Some of the 0-62 time is probably due to lower off the mark traction, as only 7.4 seconds can be attributed to weight differential (but then each timing is only given to 0.1 seconds precision, so they are technically within the measurement error)

PS - Tom, sort out your profie - it still has your lovely Patsy specified.

Does the new motor have a name?

I need to come up with a name for the red thing yes.

APR is 8.6%, £181 a month over 60 months to be exact for my 19k mile 06 plate with a £3k deposit. :) Considering my less than desireable credit rating I'm chuffed to bits. Also bearing in mind the current financial climate, a fixed interest rate over 5 years is peace of mind. :) And I'll own the car outright in the 60 months too.

And Mr G, I really can't argue with you, but ho hum

I've only gone to the Dark side.........

have considered the various comments and pro's and con's I've decided to go for the older Audi.

I really hope this isn't going to come back and bite me on the ****.

It wasn't slow by any means but didn't 'feel' as fast as my old octy. On reflection I think this may well have been down to the better quality soundproofing as cabin noise was low.

It is also 'vastly' cheaper than I could get the same car from Audi for, and I'm taking on board the comments re increased longevity of engine and drivetrain components.

I scoured the Audi and Skoda websites and basically the the A4 avant s line TFSI and the Octavia VRS TFSI weigh exactly the same and the performance figures are nigh on identical.

The Octy is definitely more spacious, but the Audi is such a nice place to be with the full leather interior, voice activated blue tooth phone calling etc. I've also looked at second hand asking prices for high mileage avants and I think I'll be a bit better of over four years and an extra 50K miles with the Audi.

So as long as it's reliable I'll be happy.

Many thanks for the replies though, I'll keep visiting this site it's always really useful

To be honest I can't see you regretting your decision! :)

I think most of these problems are confined to oil burners.

Cheers, I hope not. As much as I like the Octy, and I did enjoy my last one - especially recording a 14 second quarter at santa pod, the audi cabin is lovely.

I've thoroughly checked over the car I'm buying and it's basically in very good well maintained condition. one owner from new, hpi clear, one small scratch on the rear bumper, a couple of scuffed alloys and not particularly well polished/presented. Basically about £150 and half a days polishing and hoovering to get it perfect. so £13,775 (after the fixes) for a mint, loaded avant. I think the guy would get a lot more for it if he could be bothered to get the minor fixes done but hey-ho his loss I suppose.

The fact that the audi and octy estates weigh exactly the same and have virtually identical performance figures says a lot though...... brilliant value new the VRS:)

It is a shame when sellers can't be arsed to prepare the car properly, but thats why its a bit cheaper I suppose :)

I can't see you having any problems to be honest, the 2.0TFSI certainly has a durable feel to it! :P
