Me Turbo

Got my mate at the local garage looking into it as it's just dead (siezed). Is that why they are so expensive from say Skoda then?

Hopefully he will get one cheaper then Skoda will supply one for?

Looking at both the new and reconditioned options so just waiting for him to call me with the news on cost.

Just mentioning it as I've got the one that has about 3k on the clock, already in a box padded ready to go - so if you go for standard turbo, it's a bargain (shameless plug I know but 175 IS cheap)

Hmmmmm, would all these failed KKK units be on re-mapped cars ?

Nope - they also fail on standard cars, but if you have a 'wring it's neck off' map that sure doesnt help :)

But.... are all the ones reported here on remapped cars ?

Both times my turbo went the car was standard, its now been re-mapped for 30k and no problems with turbos since :D

Nope, mine is a standard turbo.

So the turbo and the manifold are one lump are they? seems silly not to be able to part them?

Ben

fair eesnuff

Dont know why they are as one assembly but in fairness, I guess it is just easier to manufacture/test that way or something, who knows :D

Here are some pictures of my turbo. Had to get underneath the car to get a picture, and even then it wasn't an easy job:mad:

The car was made in the end of December 2005 or more likely in the beginning of January 2006, I'm not sure (it has the BLT engine) and the turbo is a KKK (it says so on the blue plate - you can see this on the last picture).

So when you buy a new turbo, does it come with all the VNT bits?

What I mean is, does the new turbo come as one lump just to bolt back on?

Ben

Yes, the VNT mechanism is inside the turbo housing. When you find the right turbo, yes it comes as one unit and needs to include the manifold as mentioned earlier.

Depends what route you're going down to source something, but check and double-check compatibility

I'd seriously consider WW's available KKK unit, as you're running standard power. Don't be drawn to the conclusion that just because it's a KKK, that it will break :)

Steve

Mine's now sold - sorry to put damper on that one - but I would agree with the comment, I havent had any trouble with my KKK turbo :)

Mines still available ;)

Thanks for the offers chaps, much appreciated but the car is already being done.

Just been down to get an update on the progress and the chap said that the turbo shaft has sheared in half, he showed me and you can rotate each piece separate!!

Got a new unit from KKK as they were over £400 cheaper than supplying it through VW/Skoda  surprised me!!

No damage to the rest of the engine but he's going to take the intercooler off and clean it out and fit me a new air scoop as I trashed mine with a log!!

There was a boost leak anyway so I can get that sorted too but I hope the intercooler is not damaged as I don't know the cost of one of these!!!

All the air pipes are filled with oil, which is not unexpected after what happened, so a big clean out and a clean intercooler, she should go like new!!!!

Ben

IMHO get new oil feed pipes to the turbo and an oil/filter change with the correct VW grade oil.

Oil starvation can cause failure of a turbo and it could be that the pipes are slightly restricted so not worth chancing for a few £.

Glad to hear progress is being made. Who's doing the replacement for you?

Would agree with Mark too, especially on the new turbo oil feed pipe issue.

Steve

Yep deffo replace those lines, easy to do at the time and cheap, not worth risking ;)

  • Author

Yep, they changed the pipes as a matter of course, they said they don't keep the old ones for exactly that reason. (they do advise the person that it's best to chage them and most say yes for the small increase in price).

New turbo, new pipes and like you say it's not expensive either.

The garage doing the work is a well established local one near my office, they are very good at their work that's why I went there too.

I have checked the oil and it's the correct type they are going to put in.

Update on the turbo fiasco....

Just had the bill....£1,300 for....

New KKK turbo - Shaft was sheared in half

New turbo oil pipes - not clogged in the end but changed anyway

New Intercooler - big hole in it which probably didn't help the turbo much

New air scoop

Engine oil filter - VAG one

Correct spec engine oil

Reset the fault codes on the computer

Labour

VAT

All together, I'm not shocked, I thought it would be loads more for all that? or does this seem expensive to you?

They have looked at it and it would seem that the hole in the intercooler was large enough to suck in small particles and they think that's half the problem, hence the new intercooler while it's in bits.

You could hear a slight hiss but it was a lot worse when they took off the bumper & wheel arch liner, I was quite shocked when they showed me. It was full of oil in the bottom part too, some of which was probably from the turbo seals going though but I remember somebody saying about cleaning them out.

The car was down on the fuel economy by about 10 MPG too.

Getting her back tomorrow as the courier delivered the turbo to the wrong address yesterday....turds.

I'll just be happy to have her back, I'll let you know if she drives better as you could really feel the delay in boost before and having a new intercooler at 60,000 should be better as I was considering doing the clean out that was shown on here by somebody before.

Going to Stafford Sat, so that should be a good run for me to tell if it's better.

Ben

it's a lot of work, but I reckon that's about right to be fair, labour rate must be reasonable to hit those figures, but still. Hope it's sorted soon

A breakdown of costs would be helpful, but for the work I reckon that's pretty reasonable...

Soon as I get the invoice in the morning, I'll post the different costs up, doesn't bother me.

I think the labour is somewhere around the £30/hr mark?? but I'll see tomorrow.

Ben

sounds like a reasonable price to me......

look after it ;)
