I think I may try & get a different make on there then?

Did somebody say Garrett are better than KKK??

Steve, When you say 'upgrade' do you mean changing to say a Garrett from the KKK or are there different ones for not much more, (not needing a change to a FMIC though)?

Cheers,

Ben

Garrett seem to be stronger yes, Some of the earlier fabias and most of the gold pd130's have the garrett units, The One you want for the fabia vrs is a Garrett GT1749VA with garrett number 720855-1/3/4/5 or vag number 038253016S.

wouldnt need a fmic with this one, should run perfectly without.

If you find a turbo and want me to check its compatible give us a shout via pm mate.

What he said! ;)

I'm looking to get a hybrid Garrett based unit. I already have an FMIC fitted.

For still running a 'standard' setup, a suitable Garrett VA unit would be perfect.

Quite a few of the site sponsors might be able to help you out - people like F1 and the Derv Doctor would be worth contacting, see if they can source you something.

Steve

Is it only the Fabia with the KKK or is it used in the Polo and Ibiza PD130's too? For some bizarre reason I thought the VW and Seat used Garrett but I have no idea where I got that idea from :o If it's true, it might give you a few more sources to try....

Like you said earlier chris the early fabias used the garret, Mine had one, strong turbo by all accounts.

I had three fail on my 07 Plate Furby. All done under warrenty luckily. The last time it went Skoda where going to put on a Garret because they said they have virtually no issues with them. The KKK units however blow up all the time. Sadly however SUK would not permit a Garret unit so they gave me another KKK. Fingers crossed this ones lasts. :P

very interesting thread, mine must have been garret I assume!

anyone know what turbo is onthe 1.9 m-jet in my fiat?!

Like you said earlier chris the early fabias used the garret, Mine had one, strong turbo by all accounts.

But did the VW and Seat's get them also, or did they all run the KKK's? :P

Chris

I believe the very early ones came with a Garrett, but I could well be wrong...

Chris

Actually you may be right there... my old Furby vRS didn't have a KKK because the last time I had it serviced the bloke said something about I shouldn't worry about the turbo popping on this one... it's not got the weedy turbo or something along those lines

I've also been told that the best MY to own were the 05 to 55 regs... before they brought in the tighter emission laws etc.

In regard to your turbo though... MORE POWER!!! :D

I believe the rest of the VAG PD130's got the Garrett turbo......or at least the Ibiza did.

I had a problem with the KKK on mine, but it wanted to produce more boost than requested at the top end. Went into limp mode a few times.

I know at some point, the Polo 9N and Ibiza Mk4 have used KKK units, but not sure for how long or at what point in the production cycle.

Certainly worth considering :)

Steve

Any identifying features of either the KKK or Garrett? I'm suddenly quite interested to find out which I have as mine is just about at cambelt change time...

The only real way is to find the manufacturers stamp on the out side of the housing.

:iagree:

I could find nothing in my car's built info to point to which one had been used.

Steve

Easy enough to sopt the difference.

One the cold side of both turbos is the manufacturers stampings, on the garrett the numbers are stamped into the alloy and on the kKK there is a blue data plate that is rivited to the housing.

So if you have a blue plate then its a kkk and if its stamped its a garrett.

Also the garrett will say garrett on it

Easy enough to just look for the blue plate tho.

This blue plate - should it be visible from infront of the car? I took the engine cover off, and looking behind the oil filler cap I could see a recessed bit in the turbo's casting with numbers moulded into it - does that sound like the Garrett?

Im going to have a look tomorrow.

Please be garrett..... please be garrett.

Knowing my luck it will be a bloody kkk

mines is an 04 vrs ???

Yeah, mine's an '04 too. I think I've dodged a bullet. I might try and take a photo tomorrow - if anyone can do one of a KKK it would be hugely appreciated.

I'll try and take a photo of the old one when they get it off and post it up.

Might be in a state, but we can get the jist of it.

Ben

No pics of the KKK yet, but it looks similar to the garrett just the ID plate is blue and rivited on

I have a funny feeling that the very latest fabias have the garrrett too.

But it will be the very very early fabias that have the garrett.

On the second picture, is the exhaust manifold connected to the turbo as one unit? looks like quite a lump to me?

Ben

Do I have to get the manifold as well then?

Ben

When you buy the turbo, it tends to come with that manifold :) - are you going for a new one, or?
