Confused on servicing

Featured Replies

Just had my Octavia 2.0TDi serviced on its annual 2 year service at 17,000 miles. I paid to have the long-life oil in and switched over to variable servicing as I think this better suits my driving use/style.

Dealer confirmed on collection that it had been switched to variable.

Later on at home I do the service check process of ignition on, press trip reset and find that according to the maxi-dot I have 9200 miles or 372 days to go to the next service.......WTF?????

I was expecting, and the dealer said I should easily get 15k to next service.

Will this figure 'grow' a bit as I use the car or is that a pretty good indication of what I should expect. I have done 120 miles since leaving the dealer and averaged 47.7mpg so I don't think I can be accused of thrashing the poor old thing!!!!

I am slightly suspicious that they have just set it for annual service plus the seven days early that I took it in this time, or am I being too suspicious on that one - how can I tell?

Confused:confused:

I agree, it looks like they have reset it on to fixed service - take it back and get them to reset it properly.

theres too much of this not resetting, resetting to the wrong service regime. It sickens me to read.

Armed with my own conclusion they hadn't reset to variable correctly I phoned them up to ask. The response I got was "we may have forgotten to reset the long-code, that could cause the problem".

I pointed out that I specifically reminded them on the way in this morning that I wanted it reset to variable and the service receptionist wrote it on teh job sheet and then HIGHLIGHTED it with yellow highlight pen adding "I have to do that otherwise they'll forget".

Makes you wonder if they even got the correct oil in if they didn't do it as a variable, or maybe something more important was missed as well.

I now have to 'pop back' the 17 odd miles to have it done. Needless to say I won't be 'popping back' there again for any work (BTW is there anywhere on this forum for rating/discussing dealer performance - have been on other sites I used for other marques)

Some dealers do really struggle with this.

I don't suppose they forgot to charge you for the long life oil.

If it were me I would insist it were drained and refilled in your own presence as they clearly can't be sure of what they have done.

Yes there is a dealers review section.

My brother knows one of the lead mechanics at his VW dealer and they're told to always set them to fixed service intervals as opposed to variable for some reason....

Revenue?

Revenue?

Possibly but I still can't understand why my dealer manually adjusted mine when it indicated it needed servicing at 11k - I'd have expected them to just take my money for a service. Instead they set it for 20k.

Also my brother also mentioned that the mechanic had said they set them for 20k fixed from new when they use longlife oil.

Still confused on this.

Car was taken back over to dealer and assured that the service indicator had been reset to show variable intervals.

When I got in the car and checked by turning the ignition on and pressing trip reset button it comes up with '---' after miles to next service and days to next service messages. Car had done about 150 miles since being at the dealer

Is this normal???

That sounds right it may take upto 500 miles for the computer to calculate the remaining miles/days to next service as it takes your driving style and other variables into account.

Check again after a week or so and see what it says.

my car is on vairable service or so the dealer said but it tells me i require a sevice at 9,600 miles 9months old !
