The "countdown to speed limit" signs

Featured Replies

You know the ones I mean; you have a 30MPH limit in a black circle with three slashes beneath it, then a little further down the road the same again with two slashes.. etc..

I think they work really well and should be introduced for more speed limits; especially the 30s / 40s that come straight from being in an NSL area... they encourage early braking / easing off the throttle and (yes, I could be interpreted as an old man) seem to improve fuel consumption because everything is done so much more smoothly...

Oh, and it also gives the white van driver behind no excuse whatsoever to be polishing your exhaust pipe with his ford badge just because you slowed down to the 30 as the 30 started, not 300 metres in to it.

I like the illuminated signs that go with the radar..... I've seen a few posted at the begging of speed limit changes (down) and they really work! almos everyone, slows down when they flash on :thumbup:

i prefer the ones that read out your speed... it importna to have challenges in life.. shame they are only 2 digit though.....

Yeah, I know people who make sure they set them off - "30 points!"

Noone speeds through the M42 variable speed limit cameras :D Lets put those everywhere.

:thumbup::rofl:

OTOH I've seen people brake hard to get down to 30mph for the 300m countdown board. Ok, that should be a comment on their eptitude, but that just exposes following traffic to an unnecessary hard braking hazard.

As for the light-ups, what's the point if they're set up such that you can set them off at 10mph over the reduced limit they're covering, then brake and watch your speed drop on them and be doing a legal speed when you reach the restriction sign, or they only "smiley face" at you when you're 10% (speedometer reading) below the limit?

There's one of those near my house on York Road in Leeds. It's been broken for over a year and not working.
