VRS Rough as a badgers bottom!

Featured Replies

Good Morning, I thought I might seek a bit of help on here as I’ve heard good things and I’m at the end of me tether with this problem.I have a 2002/51 80,000 Octy VRSI’ve had “sporadic” running for the last few months, I can best describe it as rough running – For example at traffic lights or Junctions the car will splutter, drop revs, and almost try and stall itself – For the majority of the time the car will pull fine when I give it some gas, however occasionally there are notable gaps in the power band. The annoying thing is this will happen occasionally – the engine management light hasn’t come on with this problem, until yesterday when it decided to light up. I originally had a new o2 sensor – Courtesy of a main dealer. Did’nt work. I’ve also fitted a new temp sensor. Did’nt work. I’ve recently done an oil change and all filters. No change. The dealer doesn’t seem to think its coil packs(however I don’t seem to trust anything these dealers say anymore)Where to go from here? Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.Cheers, Phil

It would be a great help if you could post the fault code number that was thrown up by the diagnostic machine at the dealers.

Might be worth doing a search on the problems with split pipes.

From personal experience the coil packs break down under load. the car will tick over fine but will start to miss as you apply load to the engine. Frustratingly Im guessing your dealer is correct however if its still on the originals They should have been changed under warranty. They have a code on them somewhere, if you do a search its well documented within the pages of briskoda

I had a lumpy running albeit heavily tuned car & a new set of plugs worked wonders, when were yours last changed, I think its meant to be every 40,000 miles but others will confirm. Im guessing your dealer would / should have checked this though

as Stu said check for leaks as well

If the management light is coming on then the dealer should be able to check the codes alternativly if he wants to charge a lot of people on here have vag com so a "anyone got vag com near *****" thread might help

Im having the same probs, and after much searching it helps to get the throttle body cleaned and check turbo pipes for leaks.

I think the coil pack recall is still active, isn't it? If so, start there (and in any case start with "there was a recall for these coil packs..."

Then Stuart and Stu both have a point with bad plug(s) or leaky hose(s). The bad plugs are more likely if the fault is persistent, under load, and worse on a hot engine.

Is there anyway to find out if the recall is still active, and what the differences were in the coil packs ?

Would be interested to know if mine was ever done.

Try the search as Denis (DGW) has posted quite a nice informative thread before.

Thanks Stu...in the process of digging. ;)

Thanks so far, I've found a friend of a friend who has vag-com, so I'll get codes tonight.Don't know if coils have been replaced, is it just a case of ringing up a main stealer and asking if they have - I presume all recalls are logged on a database??Just read this thread ----- http://briskoda.net/forums/octavia-i/vrs-error-code-171-bank1-lean-please-help/84522/ ------ sounds quite similar to my symptomsWould failed coil pack be an intermitant problem like mine? I would have thorght it would be constant.Cheers, Phil

They can be intermittent, esp if they're going down rather than completely failed.

I personally doubt it would be the coil packs, i would be looking at split pipes.

Just had it on VAG COM 17705 came up, deleted it and went for a drive with the laptop - No codes came up. Everything ran fine - The problem will probably arise soon though.

Think this code would point towards turbo inlet hose, any thorghts?

I'm going to clean the MAF sensor tomorrow as a precautionary measure, the main inlet pipe looks like an **** to get at.

Cheers, Phil

That is a very, very common fault code. I suggest you use the search function for that code.

same code as me. I'm getting it in the garage today to have a pressure check and the throttle body cleaned. You have got exactly the same symptoms as me mate. I'll let you know what they find tonight.
