I am thinking of trading the mk1 in for a new vrs tdi, going off for a test drive next week. Just wondered what current owners thought of theirs before i go?

What maps, tuning box's etc are available and does anyone have one already? I am very much a n00b when it comes to vag diesel tuning.

I appreciate your input as always! :D

Not felt the need to modify it in any way.

Aint it funny how the two different camps see each others brands..

My personal experience of Skoda, I've owned a few - like 70 of the buggers (I run a cab fleet), is that the MK1 is reliable, and the MK2 simply isn't, It's a nice car, but expect to see a massive drop in the JD power survey for Skoda, plus remember that being a 'budget' brand, people have lower expectancies of Skoda, and so they come falsely higher than they should.

The MK2 Octy VRS is a nice car, but the Mondeo out handles it massively, Skoda's just dont seem able to put the power onto the road, the Skoda will be slightly faster, but there isn't as much in it as you'd think, the Mondy being 155bhp, and the Octy 170bhp, however the Octy is a heavy bugger, build quiality and materials are also better in the Mondeo, Skoda (as with most of VAG) use horrible cheap plastic, coated with a film of rubbery stuff to make it feel more tactile and look nicer, unfortunately when it peels (as it will) it looks cheap and tacky.

That brings us onto the dealers, I've stopped buying Skodas for the fleet as I've never found a good one, simple as that.

IMO, I'd go for the Mondeo, the only downside is it's no longer a current model, but the upside is that makes them cheaper.

VRS 195 is the only forum member I can think of with a remapped diesel VRs but I'm sure there are others.

I love mine too, even swmbo likes driving it. Not had any major issues with it yet. (touch wood) If you spend a lot of your driving in towns you may see a lot of purge cycles happening for the DPF. Or even the warning light coming on, meaning it wants you too give the car a good run at 60 kph, or higher, for 10 - 15 mins.

I find it cruises quite effortlessly, and you get nice waves of torque for overtaking in gear. I've found mine likes to be driven, rather than just limping around.

I'm sure you'll enjoy the test drive, but if it's damp you probably see, like I've seen, it can sometimes struggle to put all of it's power down. So gently with the throttle.

Not sure of the existance of proper remaps for them yet. I know Revo have been working on one, but have been hit with delays and problems, possibly over the DPF. I know there's a thread over on SCN which Revo are participating in, regarding the PD170 in the Leon.

I also believe Superchips are selling the PD170 remap again, after releasing it initially then pulling it due to problems.

I think it would run very nicely as standard anyway :thumbup:

SuperChip'd to 204 bhp (207 PS) and 319 lbft torque. (REVO have just released a 214 bhp map aswell)

No probs with DPF and the last tank returned 46 mpg over 530 miles.

I have mine remapped to around 200bhp, the torque is massive.

Only downside is the power comes in very quickly around 1900 rpm and in the wet its extremely difficult to put the power down.

It will wheel spin easily in third at 2000 rpm with half throttle. [ with wet road surfice]

Makes it more fun!!

Strangely it was the cheap 'orrible scratchy plastics inside the Mondeo that put me right off it and onto the Octy.

I'd say pretty much like for like.

But don't forget you can map the petrol too! :thumbup:

A remapped TDI matches the standard FSI-T 0-62 (7.5secs - estate) and should destroy it in gear. (relatively).

Top speed becomes 145 vs 147 mph (remappedD vs stdP)

As mentioned above, chip the petrol and get +40-65 bhp depending on other upgrades (major works can see a total of 300+ bhp)

I also had a mk1 before getting the vrs tdi,my mk 1 vrs was standard aswell,funny thing is even though the tdi 10bhp less its feels quicker than the mk1, obviously because of the amount of torque it has.The in gear acceleration is impressive ,it gives a lot of bigger engine cars a scare ,you feel like you can give anything a go.

The find tdi shows its best on motor ways and b roads ,around town and in traffic I find the turbo lag in first to be a bit of a downer.

I also find in 2nd on dry road it still battles to put its power down properly,as you would expect trying it in the wet you have no hope.please tell us how the test drive went.

It's more a matter of "type" of performance. Just raw figures don't tell the whole story. You need to drive both to understand the very different engine characteristics.

The TDI has immense mid range torque, but quite a limited rev range and a slightly grainy feel to it, whereas the TFSI is noticeably smoother, without quite the same mid range punch, and revs out much higher.

Once you have driven both you will probably have a clearer idea of which one suits your particular driving style best. If you still can't make up your mind buy the TDI for its superior fuel economy :)

having owned a MKII petrol vrs for around eight months before selling it, I was suprised by how fast the Tdi felt at times,...... and how slow it felt at others :confused:

I think it's a car you need to 'learn' to drive quickly because of the way the power is delivered and the huge torque spike. By the end of the test drive I'd got the hang of it and started to really enjoy it.

The comment I often read with respect to fast diesels is 'just leave it in gear while the petrol driver has to change down'. In this respect the car I drove was highly dependant on correct gear selection because turbo spool up was sloooow.

In a nutshell, probably not as easy to drive fast as the petrol from the off, but a pretty rapid cross country tool when you get used to it :)

Big names like Revo and SuperChips are about £600, smaller outfits charge from £250-300 AFAIK.

The main diffrence is the warranties offered by the bigger brands (SuperChips offers up to 3 years matching the manufacturers warranty, the Buckingham HQ offers free re-flash if map is lost and free return to standard map if so desired, this last service is on a once per vehicle basis, not every other weekend mind, other franchise sites may differ)

Plus I still think they have put more research in to the development, SuperChips are the official development partners for VW Racing (VAG UK's racing arm) and supply the works team and one make series.

Don't forget to mention the forum, BriSkoda, UK-MKVs and Cupra.net members get 10-15% discount at SuperChips HQ in Buckingham, other franchise sites may differ.

Like Matt I had a Mk 1 vrs before buying my TDI VRs last year. I was always a petrol head and never even considered diesel before buying it. I find the diesel has a power delievery more akine to the Mk 1 compared to the petrol (Mk 2 Petrol a little too refined for me) and hence I preferred it to the petrol. The petrol was very fast but due to being so smooth it did not feel it (I like to feel the wheel sqirm a bit under heavy acceleration). Since you can not go above about 75 without risk of points and licence loss anything faster is a bit of a waste in my view (I am more interested in the smile I have up to that and for that the diesel was best). Getting the power down can be a problem in the wet but only if you plant your foot. If you moderate the throttle well then you get all the acceleration you need (also immensly satisfying when you do get it right- bit dull if all you have to do is plant your foot and steer left and right!!!).

However, I would suggest driving both and make your own mind up as to what you prefer (we are all different).

I have had a mondeo st-tdci (155bhp) and a Vectra cdti (150bhp) and the vRS blows the socks off both of them
