Blu-Ray

Featured Replies

Now the HD-DVD Vs Blu Ray battle seems to have been won by blu ray (as i always thought it would) i really want to get a blu ray player but the question is.. which one?

I have looked at the sony BDP-S500 just wondering if anyone has an opinion as to which ones are worth a look?

I have read that the pioneer BDP-LX70A is the dogs dangleys but its well out of what im willing to spend on a player.

Would it not just be cheaper to grab a PS3???

Maybe a second hand one or something?!

Phil

PSP3. it does HDMI 1.3a, 24hz, HD Audio etc has a reasonable HDD and WiFi. It might be a little slower than the mighty Pioneers but it seems to get firmware updates at regular intervals.

Apparently it plays games too?:D

Would you really recommend a PS3 over a stand alone blu-ray? I'm all for one if its as good as a seperate blu ray player!!

Stuff magazine have the PS3 at numero uno in their blu ray player reviews but is that because of the added functionality or because of its quality?

If you do a bit of internet research you’ll see that many magazines rate it above stand alone players.

Do you need it soon?

Prices will tumble when production all shifts over from HD to BR.

I saw the Sony you mention and it was a little juddery on 24 frames. Not sure if the monitor was set up correctly though.

Another vote for the PS3. It is a very good Blu-ray player. Plus it is the cheapest player that is out that is already profile 2.0 ready (most players out can't play profile 1.1, only 1.0). You can play the discs on the older players but you may not get all the funcionality or content of future releases (the latest Resident Evil film is the first uk release that meets profile 1.1)

Given all the space and computing power in the ps3, it is unlikely that the disc specs will overtake it, also it is a good games machine and a very fast folding machine.

The PS3 is ok if you want a games console as well, but will look out of place in most home cinema setups. I found the sony PS3 bluray software player rather cluncky. I would much rather have a dedicated player, they are quieter and look more at home in the Home cinema environment.

Quieter!!

Are you confusing the PS3 with the Xbox 360?? The PS3 is SILENT in operation!!!

Agreed the looks are a little strange if you just want a standalone blu ray, but with the BD remote for about £15 it's as good as a standalone in terms of simplicity but with the added funcationality of a games/multimedia machine. Also the review reckon it;s better than most if not all standalone players!

Get the PS3!!!! You won't be dissapointed!

:iagree:

Hold your horses if you can. In US blu-ray players are expected to hit the $200 mark

this year, yes we'll pay more as usual, but would expect to get a good stand alone player

by autumn for £200. Yes you can get them for around that now, but a good one, no.

I too was quick to rubbish the ps3 as a blu-ray player, but apparantly they are actually

pretty good. Might be worth a trawl through AV forums, as I've heard something about

future compatability issues within blu-ray format, with regards to current players.;)

You see ‘theres thems that know and thems that know they know’ ;):D

The PS3 is the only Blu Ray player currently available that offers the ability to upgrade to BluRay profile 2.0. Sony were wise enough to install the hardware that supports future technology in the box.

No doubt standalone players will soon include this hardware but if you wnat one now, you could do a lot worse.

Does anyone have a PS3 for sale then?

Currys and Game have loads :P

Superfi offer a few free discs too and I have always managed to haggle a ‘bit off’ any gear I have bought from them:thumbup:

I think the HDD/network access etc was less to do with Sony's wisdom on the future of Blu-Ray and more to do with the 360 and original XBOX already having that stuff installed

:)

For this weekend only gameplay are selling ps3's with 2 games and 2 controllers for £299 .. not a bad deal i think :)
