Detachable Tow Bar on a vRS

Featured Replies

Does anyone know the max weight that can be towed on the detachable tow bar on the Octy vRS. I have looked everywhere and I can't find it stated. Can anyone shed some light please?

Thanks mate, so no difference to a permanent fixed one then?

Isn't it down to what the 2wd octy can pull i know the 4x4 is 1600kg?

That makes sense I suppose. I just though that the detachable two bar was for light use only. At least thats what the seller told me when I bought the car. He might have said that he only used it for "Light use" i can't remember, hence the question.

Depends on the towbar. if it is properly mounted Westfalia (short one, does not require bumper cut), definitely normal use. With Brink (long one, does require bumper cut), some of them do not fit all mounting holes - I guess quality control is a problem.

Unfortunately, I bought Brink one. I would not use Brink mounted on 2 bolts to the chassis for anything exceeding 300kg / 50kg noseweight. If one of the bolts goes, there goes the bumper and the trailer, and the rear lights....

So check under the carpets how many bolts it is mounted with. If 2 bolts it's light use, if 4 bolts, whatever the car manual says.

4 bolts 1500kg!?

My dad had 2 cars with Witters on them, and they both had about 12 bolts on them!

My one definately doesn't require the bumber tpo be cut and as far as I know is a genuine Skoda one (whatever towbar manufacturer they use I don't know!!)

I will have a look at the number of bolts and see what I can find.

Thanks for the advice.

I think when i fit mine i will need to cut a little bit underneath so i can fold down the electrics and put the towbar in its slot. This will not be noticable unless you crawl underneath.

Mine is genuine too.

Not total number of bolts, just the bolts mounting the towbar (ie the big lump of metal that replaced your bumper carrier) to the car's frame. There are only 4 holes in the frame, so it is hard to fit more than 4 bolts...:)

Skoda/VW towbar is probably best, if you can get one. I was only referring to alternatives.

I have a Brink detachable bar on mine, held on to the chassis by 4 huge bolts. I tow a 21ft Phantom race boat - gross weight approx 1400kgs. I have never had any problems, have used it 30-40 times for towing. No cutting was required either. Great bit of kit.

For other pictures look on the Jabba sticky - Milltek 2.75" stainless system, more pice are there.

Original skoda swan neck tow bar might be worth a thought Steve.

The electrics flick up behind the bumper and the neck completely detaches. There is no sign that you have a tow bar on at all.

Keeps the VRS looking sleek.

Does it have enough power to tow? Shouldn't you have bought a tdi?

Skoda genuine bars are made by Brink.

If it doesn't fit right it's either the wrong bar for the car or you may have a "jigged chassis"
