power steering..

Featured Replies

Right my mum drove the car today and as she was reversing out the car parking space she said the steering was really heavy so she went back into the space and checked the wheels (god knows why lol) jumped back in the car and it was ok. I went out tonight reversing off the drive and the steering was very heavy!, so i stopped for a few seconds and it was ok again,

anyone had this? im getting no lights up on the dash... also where is the resevoir to check the level?

Thanks,

Mark

very common problem.

Steering Angle Sensor (most prob)

Altinator (poss' .. hope not v-expensive)

reservoir is under the battery.

hmm ive heard about the sensor and alternator problem, but i thought these were both associated with the power steering light and batterey light?

and will it be safe to use the car still?

Couldn't tell you to be honest.

If it's one of the above mentioned faults then yes it wil be ok.

However, if it's and electrical gremlin then who knows. Probably best to get it checked out.

yer gonna need to book it in, its just i need the car for work, and if i can't get to work it can't get fixed lol :(

vicious circle mate.

If it's the alternator the battery light may remain on but dimmed after ignition. You may also find the airbag warning light comes on.

Both occurred on my Pug when it's alternator went. Airbag light came on a couple of days after the dimmed battery light. YMMV.

If it is the alternator best check your battery for health once repaired.

A wheel check is quite sensible as under inflated tyres will cause heavy steering. The angle sensor is likely even if the light isn't on. Had one today with same symptoms, no faults, battery charging was fine, but a look at the steering wheel turn rate in the measuring blocks did not correspond to the input that I was giving the steering wheel.

Faulty power steering is an MOT fail and when it dies on a Fabia it is really heavy and potentially dangerous.
