Cam belt or chain?

Featured Replies

I have an 02 plate Fabia classic - 1.4 petrol engine.... - bought it in december.

Are they fitted with a Cam belt or Cam chain? if its a belt, well I'll be getting it changed sharpish... its done nearly 70,000 miles and tehres nothing anywhere to suggest its ever had one done - and I have its full service and MOT history...

If its an MPi then it has a chain (thats what I've got), if its 16v then its got a cambelt

Its an MPi ,

Thankyou!

I'm looking at an MPi as well - what are the advantages/disadvantages with this over the VW ones with cam belts?

The Chain lasts longer.

If it breaks, it wont knacker the rest of the engine.

Down on power compared to the 16v

Better on low down torque, so could be better round town etc.

Although Im sure there'll be some people who may disagree with that.

It doesnt eat its piston rings either , like some of the earlier 16V engines do , though later ones are supposed to be better. My Mpi has ran as sweet as a nut for over 2 and a half years of my ownership , and never used a drop of oil between servicing. As for power I find it 'adequate' as Rolls Royce used to say!!
