A Sunday Testdrive

Featured Replies

Hey everyone,

As of today I'm within touching distance of buying a Fabia VRS. I went to look at a 2006 (Jan) up in Nothern Ireland (I'm based in Dublin). Great drive, unmodified, in excellent condition, with FSSH, HPI clear and warranty till 09. However, I had three questions to ask about it.

First, the car was pulling a little to the left. Is this just a standard tracking issue easily fixed at my local garage or could it be something more?

Second, I've a couple of pics of the boot area (around the spare tire) and there's a weld to the right. Is this standard on Fabia's or could I be looking at crash repairs or something like that?

Finally, I was thinking about getting a mechanic or even the AA to take a gander (£150 or so). Is it worth it even though the car is still under warranty? As you might have guessed, I'm not the most mechanically minded.

I'd appreciate any wise words at this moment because I'll be handing over the guts of £8k on Wednesday if its good.

Thanks,

Vista

In terms of pulling to the left, they all do that, sir. Basil fixed his by putting shims on the rear wheels, iirc, but I'm not sure that's something you'd want to do to a car in warranty.

Chris

the welding looks as if too much has been applied and burned off.

Presumably that's not a factory weld then?

Chris

Both my Fabias have pulled slightly to the left.

Just been out and checked in my boot. I have a weld there looks exactly same as yours. What are the brown flecks in the picture along the sealant?

£150 for a AA check is your call. If it was from a main dealer i`d spend that on the family, however if a Private sale, i would have it checked.

Cheers everyone.

Pulling to the left sounds grand then. The welding just looked a tad untidy, but if it's common on all Fabia's that's taken a load off my mind. I think I'll get the AA out though, as us Irish always say... 'to be sure, to be sure'.

I think I'll have to put pics up when I pick her up!

One last question, do you reckon Skoda Ireland will honour the warranty even though its a Northern Irish (therefore UK) car?

Thanks,

Vista

Yeagh, get some pics up when you are all sorted. Don`t know about the last question but if you are not too far from the border nip over and visit the dealer there.

Yeah, I checked it with HPI, and it all checks out. Had the V5 in hand today too so that reassured me.

Just another question while I think of it. What does the watermark on the V5 look like? When I checked it, it was just DLA repeated.

Have they proven to you it's been hpi checked?

Get it HPi checked £20
