My Fabia vRS's engine note has changed

Featured Replies

I have noticed that in the last couple of days (could this be something to do with the little accident I had....?

.... that the engine note of the car seems to have changed. Now, if you are driving hard, as soon as you go past about 2,000rpm the car makes a whooshing sound, which I liken to being a bit like the sound of the ventilation fans inside the car coming on at the 3rd or 4th setting.

Because it only occurs after 2000rpm and when I am driving hard, I assume its likely to be the turbocharger on the car, but could my turbo be damaged or is it normal for the car to change in this way? The engine, as a result seems noticably noisier now. Performance does not really seem impacted at all from what I can tell?

It also seems a bit smokier, but that could be my imagination...

Any thoughts?

I would get it checked out.. you may have damaged the intercooler, which is behind the wing on the drivers side. sounds like you have a boost leak. :(

Thanks mate, I'll definitely get that checked out. I suspect this guy, who wants to settle outside of insurance, is going to get an awfully large shock when he finds out just how much it is going to cost to repair...

If you have a look thru the grille in the front you should be able to see the intercooler. IIRC intercoolers cannot be repaired.. and i dont really want to think how much they cost

The Octavia diesel one costs

Mine makes the whooshing noise at just over 2000 and has done for a while. Think it became more apparent post Jabba, but pretty sure it has been there pretty much from new. Get it checked and report back. If it is anything to be checked, then I shall take a look at mine too.

mine wooshes at 2000rpm and over to i just assume it was the turbo

Yup the PD's do woosh a bit. And it will do more post remap as the boost pressure will have been increased to some degree. Mine sounds bloody loud im told from the outside, especially with the exhaust/downpipe.

But if youve had a knock in the front might be worth just checking the lower intercooler pipe, they are just a push fit connection and sometimes come loose given a knock.

Thanks fella's. I am still going to take it to the dealers today just to get them to check, just in case like....

Edit: It definitely seems more smokey post accident - the back of my car is covered in soot!!!
