Funny Rattly knocking noise

Featured Replies

Hi guys, hope you can help

when my car is on tick over there is a strange noise coming from inside the engine bay, it seems to be located down the left hand side of the engine but cant decide if its at the front by the alternator or back by the turbo pipe,

sounds similar to a dodgy bearing i had on an alternator on my old hyundai coupe,

it does sound like its at the bottom of the engine,

any suggestions,

btw: car is running fine, not missing a beat,

cheers

Rob

could be a loose nut m8

thought of that but its more subtle and deep sounding rather than a loose nut rattle,

Read a 'rattle thread' a while ago, a few on here located (and cured) it, turned out to

be the little orange clip that keeps the bonnet support arm to the inside engine bay.

Think the fix was to jam a bit of card or plastic under it. ;)

mope i thought of that,

coming from the drivers side of the engine, from the bottom i think, just cant put my finger on it,

but its one of those, was it there before i noticed it jobs,

Tensioner for the timing belt. Does it sound like metal rattling, could also be the one way alternator pulley. could be anything from that side of engine, water pump, ~???

It could be anything tbh..

Is it due a cam belt?

It could be something simple like a loose bolt, or something horrid like a failing bearing....

Take it to a garage, and when it blows up, blame them...

HTH.

it is due a cambelt but only done 41k on an 04 reg,

really hard to describe, its a subtle sound under the ticking diesel,

i had a listen before the good lady took it to durham for the weekend and it sounds like it was coming from under the fuel filter, do these make any noise? i did change it at the weekend,

but its that region of the bay

will get it booked in when she get back from durham after the weekend,

know a mechanic from audi who will do the cambelt for £100.00 only takes him an hour, and £80 to put me a sachs clutch in and that only takes him 40 mins,

watched him do a a4 timing belt, he's like a machine when he gets going

Try the air intake. Just a thought. I had a rattle coming from the enigne bay and this is what it turned out to be.
