Sump

Featured Replies

Wondered if some kind person would like to give me an estimate of how much a new sump and fitting may cost.

Went back to my parents for a couple of days and found a small pool of oil under the car. Had it up on a ramp and found 2 hair line cracks near the sump plug which are seeping oil through them. It's not pouring out, so as long as I keep an eye on the oil level and only drive it to get it sorted it should be ok.

The only problem is it being a bank holiday weekend I can't get anyone to give me a price!

Thanks everyone!

Motorcyclists should love that at this time of year!

Have you hit something or is it a manufacturing fault?

I did have a small offroad "experience" the other day. However the crack is on the back side of the sump. Actually, I said sump plug, but it might actually be the oil level sensor on the back.

Sump approx £80

Fitting (1HR) approx £100

Probably £50 of oil as well I think.

Good point.

Or as a temp. repair clean area with solvent and apply Quicksteel (From Partco) £10

That work ok on aluminium?

Yep its brilliant, we use it a lot. Works on plastic, metals etc. Will bind when surface is a bit wet, when its gone off you can file and drill it.

Can be strengthened with signs wire.

Ive used it to repair badly corroded thermostat hosings, exhausts, radiators( cut out the leaking tube pack with quicksteel and crimp the tube ends), header tanks, fuel tanks, all sorts.

Every tool kit should have some along with some hose repair tape and a coil of signs wire !

Quick update, just in case anyone is thinking of putting a crack or a hole in their sump. Skoda want £250 to replace sump. That's including oil labour VAT etc.

Now I need to find some way of either replacing or fixing the plastic guard/cover as it keeps flapping around whilst driving at about 70mph. The rear holes for the screws have broken leaving it loose.

Should be inexpensive to replace the plastic thingie... you should be able to DIY and you could purchase it from the spare parts dept at the dealer's for less than 50Euros...I'd say 30?

Taking it off/putting it back is a required operation when the oil is changed, so you don't need to ask the dealer to do it if you want to save a few pounds :)
