Replacing Brake Caliper Guide pin bolts

Featured Replies

I am about to replace the front and rear discs and pads for on my Fabia VRS

I have ordered a full set of Mintex discs and pads, which have arrived today.

Reading through my haynes manual it says the caliper guide pin bolts should be replaced when the pads are removed, and they are supplied with the pads (I assume they would be if I was using genuine parts)

The pads which have arrived only have new bolts for the rear and not for the front.

Is it totally necessary to replace the bolts and if so what is the reasoning? is is because they have therad lock on the threads.

It is is necessary to replace the bolts, can they be bought on their own from a Skoda dealers, and does any one know the part number?

You only have to undo the bottom bolts on the front calipers so you should have one per side for the front.

But yes its only threadlock and you could renew that.

Hello and Wecome to this forum, Lynneh.

You undo it with a socket and/or a spanner!. Undo this bottom the bottom bolt, you may need a spanner to stop the inner nut from turning, (sorry I can't remember the size)

I can't quickly find a pic of the front, but here is one of the Rear calipers. Only undo the bottom one.

It's from this thread: Briskoda.net/technical-guides/fabia vrs - how change rear discs pads You do not need a special tool to push the pistons back on the front. Once the bolt is off, then swing the calliper (you may need an old screwdriver to leaver the pads back a bit. Push the Piston fully back with either a G-clamp, large players, or I use a crowbar with old pads as packing. Remember to keep an eye on the fluid level in the reservoir, some people say you should open the bleed nipple to stop old fluid going into the system.

Replace the pads, putting a thin layer of copper-slip on the back of them to stop pad squeal. If the new pads do not come with this new guide bolt, as mentioned above wire brush the old one and add a drop of thread lock (LocTite), then tighten to 35Nm (26 lbf ft). Repeat for the other side.

As you can see it's dead easy to do, only one bolt after the wheel nuts are off. Remember to operate the brake peddle once completely finished.:D
