Hi,can somebody just tell me if this is excessive consumption? Also i am topping up with semi synthethic but am reading lots of people using fully synthetic?

You should be topping up with the appropriate long life oil (506.01?).

Permissable consumption it 1 litre per 600 miles.

heck that was quick.Should it be fully synthetic?

Should be fully synthetic long life oil. I've put in around 3 litres in about 8000 miles.

Don't fill it to maximum. I run mine at around half and barely burn any.

You must buy the correct oil as stated above.

The correct oil is 507.00 IIRC. :)

I don't know if it works on the TFSI but it used to help on the TDI's.

If you have been driving the car gently, top up the oil, warm the engine up and give it a good high rev run down the motorway. Once you've done this let the engine cool down a bit before turning it off.

Give it a few hours and check the oil again plus top up.

Oh and yes Tom it is VW507 (5w-30) oil for the 2.0TFSI.

OUt of interest, how have the OP cars and others with high consumption been run in?

Im on 8k now also and ive not had to top it up at all! Although saying that, I can see me having to put some in before it makes it to the first service.

I dont 'baby' the car. From new, its always been allowed plenty of warming up time (usually 6 miles on my daily route) and a minute or two idleing before I shut it off but Ive never been scared to use the performance fully.

I have a theory that a lot of vag cars that come with fully synthetic from that factory, need a certain amount of 'use' to get the seals bedded in properly. If this is done I'd guess you'd see lower oil consumption?

They usually use abit up to 20k anyhow, but some more than others. All seem to lvel off after that anyhow.

Bear in mind though if you are topping up regular at 1 litre per 2000 miles before you get to 10k you have effectively changed the oil. Diluting the oil with non 507.00 will throw out the variable servicing. 1 litre of the incorrect oil is the maximum allowed.

I've put in 1l in 8.5k miles.

I read this before I bought.

Break In Secrets--How To Break In New Motorcycle and Car Engines For More Power

I've no idea if this is true or not. But when I got my Octy I couldn't help but give it some welly so I kind of stuck with that guide without trying. i.e. Hard acceleration but not high revs.

Doesn't seem to have done any harm and my oil consumption is lower than many. The car is driven for economy mostly with the occasional 'play'.

I picked mine up a 19,900, now done 22,300, and the level has dropped by about a quarter of the range on the dipstick. I did pop a drop more oil in, but I think Stu may be right, its less likely to burn oil if its not constantly full to the brim. :)

give it a good high rev run down the motorway.

But of a problem if there is no motorway handy!

Any suitable road will do where it is safe to do so ;)

My one brought the oil light on! So I went straight to the dealer for the correct oil. Apparently this is quite common! Personally I don't see the point of it! I don't mind frequent oil changes on a performance engine. My car was an ex demo & bought it at 3 months old. The dealer refused to change the oil even after much pressing. I'd have thought that 6K miles or 1 year would be a suitable interval. The last thing I want is crappy oil in my engine.

The oil for variable servicing is long life which is up to about 18k miles depending on quality. The car has a sensor which checks oil quality to calculate the service requirements.

20k according to the book :P

18600 miles if you want to get technical.
