How quick does oil go black?

Featured Replies

Hi there

I had my oil changed at National Tyre yesterday. They managed to strip the threads on the sump in the process, but say it happened as they took the plug out and it's tight enough not to leak.

But I have checked the oil level today, after doing maybe 50 miles since the change and the oil is black again! Surely it couldn't of gone black that quickly? Makes me think they haven't actually changed it??

It's a 2000 SLX TDI estate that's done 94,000.

Thanks

Had my 40000 main dealer service recently and mine turned darker after a weekends work of about 300 miles.

Mine was dark when I collected it from service... it really does go black pretty much first turn of the key.

What about the sump plug , is it not worth telling them they will have to give you a new sump . As they damaged the thread .

I'd suggest getting a 3rd party garage (skoda) or AA approved etc to confirm the damage and then tell them (national) they are paying or you will start legal proceedings in the small claims court.

I've noticed that they have not used new sump plugs in other posts, but these are a single use item and should be replaced.

Who did the sump last time, was it a skoda garage or another garage. If the push comes to shove and they do the chuckle brothers line (to me, to you), then you can name them both in the legal action and one of them is going to lose in court.

I really really wouldn't accept tight enough as if that comes out you will destroy your engine in an instant and potentially dump a large amount of oil on the road which could kill somebody else.

On the original question, yes 50 miles is fine for a derv car. I used to change my own oil on the old cars and even if i fully flushed it the stuff would be black again before 25 miles were out.

Agree i would approach them about it again, totally unsatifactory.

Had the same probs with sump plug 2 services ago the Skoda dealer , said it was tight and had stripped thread , as the previous service had been with another Skoda dealer i made them talk on the phone and agree to replace at their cost , no way was i going to drive out and dump all the oil and ruin my engine .

Oil takes approx 3 seconds to go black in a diesel.
