Squeak and brake pads

Featured Replies

hi there I'm getting an intermittent scraping/ squeking noise from my drivers side front wheel at low speeds and when turning, think it might be the brake pads I've done a visual check and they dont look that low but tbh I wouldnt know what is low and what isn't the pad looks about a 1cm thick.

what are the best pads for standard discs? is there anything else it could be?

forgot to say car has done 35k.

there is a layer of rust all the way around the outside of the front and rear discs is this normal?

Weird question but what does the sounds sound like? Metal on metal? Or a rubbing? Is the noise there all the time?

sounds like a chirping like metal on metal yes. its not all the time either its intermittent and at low speeds.

maybe the brakes just need a jetwash?

also does the fabia have a warning light for low brake fluid?

tried to have a gander at my bottle this morning but cant see a thing due to its position and a dirty bottle!

Maybe jet wash and see if it goes away, if not get the pads taken off and add some copper grease to the back of the pads and put back in. sounds like the pads are catching and rubbing.

Hmmm, this is happening on my car, 45k miles. MOT highlighted no problems, although said front breaks were very low.

Full replacements going on in the next couple of months.

Should go away with new pads.

Yep - it's shared with the handbrake light, iirc but worth cleaning the bottle anyway so you can read the marker, or just unscrew the cap and see how far up it comes.

1cm of brake pad sounds like you're approaching the end of life of the pads (they are designed to screech so you know when to replace them) but not there yet if they're only screeching intermittently. It could easily be a stone or something caught in them.

If you're looking to replace, 35k miles out of a set of pads is pretty respectable , but worth checking the thickness of the disc too so you can get them changed at the same time :D Rust around the edge of the discs is normal and is just where the pads don't sweep them, creating a ridge. It's usually more noticeable on the rears, but can easily just be tidied up by chipping it off.

I had the exact same problem with mine and mines done 38k. It got progressively worse over a few thousand miles. Took it to local VAG specialist pre MOT and told them to strip the front down, clean up and re-assemble. They rang me back as soon as it was in the air and said it required discs all round (and pads obviously) and a calipre on the opposite side to the squeak to get through the mot. The discs were shot at and I don't drive it hard either. The rears in particular were badly scored.

Total bill £349 - not too bad I suppose but you probably won't need as much.
