Oil Pressure Light on 1.8T

Featured Replies

My Mk.1 Octavia 1.8 T Automatic has done about 2,000 in the last year and a few weeks back it screamed for a service. Perhaps it's on a variable service schedule.

Anyway, I didn't get around to changing the oil for a while, but over the weekend the oil pressure light came on and told me to stop. Which I didn't since I was finished my journey in about a mile. Light came on once more on my way back, again when I was almost home. Hasn't been on since, but now engine management/diagnostic light is on.

Should I be concerned?

I now have changed the oil and filter.

Is there a common 1.8T problem I should know about?

I've never heard of the Oil light coming on as being a common problem.

You could have a faulty oil pressure switch or the connection/wire is earthing out somewhere.

Worst case is that the you are losing oil pressure..How long did you leave it between oil changes? Miles etc? Was the oil level low when the light came on?

As to why you engine lights on Vag Com would be the best bet for seeing what'sup.

It was serviced about a year ago and I've only done about 2,000 miles since.

Actually, the oil level was low when I checked it before draining, so that could contribute to low oil pressure.

Yep that would make sense as you've now changed the oil it should be ok..

Engine light might have nothing to do with the above it could be another problem  or it could be nothing to worry about

What colour was the oil light?

Amber is oil level, red is pressure either way you will need someone with VAG-COM to read the fault codes

Id be worried its the oil pump failing (common on 18t.s) thats why vw have changed the oil to 5/30 as 10/40 was sludging up and blocking the pick up pipe and pump

leading to oil starvation.

seen it happen on loads of vag 18ts

if oil pressure light is on turn it off and wait for the oil to cool or phone breakdown before you kill your engine.its easier to get the oil pump done than getting hold of a decent 1.8t from a breakers.

you may think a oil change will fix it, but it just starts again after a few miles (as in 20)

hopefully your a lucky one but id doubt it :thumbdwn:
