the 5th gear noise problem!

Featured Replies

holla.

right, my sisters boyfriend has a 1.6 hatch like mine, and its developed the 5th gear wine/werring problem.

i understand this is dew to the 5th gear retaining nut coming undone.

had anyone fixed this them selfs? if so what do i need and what do i do?

i am a capable mech, but every job has its hidden tricks and pit falls.

would be glad of any advice.

Try a pm to daverapid, if anybody knows he will

Basically you remove the end cover from the gearbox, which means draining the oil, removing the mount and supporting the gearbox whilst you do it. Once the cover is off you will see the nuts that have to be replaced, part number N90790601 - 2 of, at around £6.28 each + VAT. There is no gasket between the end cover and main part of the gear box, re-assemble using a gasket compund/sealer. Fill up thge gear box with fresh oil through the speedo drive, being careful not to drop the speedo gear into the gear box when you take it out.
