Forum Influence to Buy a Car

Featured Replies

Can a forum influence your decision to buy the second most expensive you're likely to purchase after a house, namely a car?

Yes. Although Jezza's pretty glowing review of the Furby in the Times confirmed my desire for a Fabia vRS, I'd already ordered it by then, and probably wouldn't even considered one if it hadn't have been for this place! :)

The Ford Focus Owners Club told me to buy the Fabia over a mark two focus as well as the brother in law

I certainly think that other peoples opinion has a element of influence over the car you choose. I know there is also a level of one up man ship amongst my friends as well that probably plays a part.

I don't think that a forum would influence my choice on which car to buy, but it would certainly influence which specific cars I looked at buying in the first place. But then saying that, if everyone on here told me to buy a ford.. i still wouldn't :P

A forum is going to be as about as independent as you can get. But you'd be daft if you didn't take bias into account.

A Skoda forum just might have a bias towards that brand.

If you have a car you like and you visit a forum where it gets glowing praise it will help to seal the deal. And vice versa.

Yes. You and Stu are personally responsible for me having the debt of a small developping country!

Surely that depends on whether you're on the forum Steve ;)

BS, you love it :);)

I would say yes it can, I had an Impreza and when looking for a change someone on Scooynet was raving about the fabia vRS, so I lurked here for a bit then took the plunge and am now on my 3rd Skoda (although this current one is my least favourite :))

Yes - see my the third thread I wrote on the forum :D

not overly. I was already on my second Fabia when I joined and planned to get an octy or similar sooner or later, which I did. Then replace that with something else with a bit more power, which I may yet do. Not really much to with others apart from maybe what brand of car.

Never mind what car you are getting Rookins, I bet I know what was the biggest influence when it came to picking the colour of your new car :P

Yes, definatly.

I see a good forum like this be an addition to support from a dealer and the manufacturer. My choice was narrowed down due to this forum.

Steve

I found Briskoda after I'd bought mine, which was partially influenced by positive comments by a Skoda taxi driver and partly from the new (then) model being brought out. Now I see Briskoda like Amex. Never leave home without it

i haven't bought a car due to this or any other forum , i already had my VRS before i found this forum , but i have been influenced by peoples own road test experiences to go and road test a few cars myself , with a view to maybe purchasing a car in the future , so other members thoughts on cars has been helpful

I would say this forum played a major part in me being convinced on buying my car. I was interested beforehand and then found Briskoda to do my research.

I allways buy with my heart not my head, thats why I'm allways skint:D

Steve

Fix Or Repair Daily; For Obviously Car Understanding Salesmen? Somewhat Traumatic?

I had already decided on the Octavia TDi VRS when I discovered this forum, although I had not ordered. I had an idea of what optional extras I wanted, and the responses received to my first post asking about the value and how useful/practical my shopping list was helped me decide exactly what to order.

So all in all - YES

My Brother first found this forum, whilst I had my Fabia. Since I didn't have a computer and then I sold my car. i wanted to joint the forum but waited untill I owned an Octy vRS, which I've always wanted.

I had decided on Skoda when I joined this forum. I consider it more of an affirmation but still definitely an influence.

I think The Motoring press is the biggest influence in me buying cars. I joined here after I bought my Octy for some advice and tips. And I joined a Mazda site after I bought the Mazda.

I wouldn't specifically join a forum if I wanted advice about buying that particular car, as the members are usually very biased towards the brand or model of car.

I prefer independant advice on such a big decision.

I wasn't influenced by this site, I new I wanted a fast car, room for kids, big boot for big dog + pushchair and cheap to buy and run. I couldn't find anything that ticked all of these boxes until a mate with a vr6 golf suggested I look at the octavia vrs, I looked I bought I've not looked back.

ps. it was the Skoda dealer that told me about Briskoda

I tend to buy some fairly odd cars myself, all ways looking for something a little different from the norm. I'd say the Golf is about the most main stream car I have had in recent years.

Do I buy a car because of a forum, no. Do forum give me ideas then yes.
