I have just replaced my Conti sport contact 2's after 17,300 K and they weren't quite down to the wear indicators. Wouldn't consider myself a slow driver either. Then again I don't drive round like a loony. What's the most you have eked out of your tyres?

I drive a VRS Octavia II, petrol.

On another slightly different tack, excuse the pun. I have also had to replace the drivers side rear after a Rawlbolt casing wrecked the tyre. My local tyre bloke did not have any Conti 2's left so I went with the new Conti Sport Contact 3. I have noticed that it does not seem to have the same road contact profile as the 2's ie not as much rubber on the tarmac, the edges seem to have greater radiuses, small point, but it bugs me cause i'm an anorak. Maybe the pressure is to high. Anyone else noticed this?

My Factory Conti Sport Contacts lasted about 15k then I changed them as the last 2.5 of tread was getting really slippy. Probably could have got more out of them but didn't like the handling.

I did not mention that the tyres that did 17'K were the fronts

Are we talking about 225/45 17s or 225/40 18s?

Either way; looks like I'll get around 18,000 miles from the fronts and 30,000 on the rears from my 225/40 18 Michelin Pilot Exalto 2s. I'm told to expect 2-3,000 miles less from Pilot Sports.

No I went for GoodYear Eagle F1 GS-D3 (18inch). Also assumed you meant front tyres, same with me. Now at 23k on the clock and the F1's are only slightly worn.

The rear are still the original Conti's. When I eventually get to the next set think I might try Michelin, but still very happy with the F1's, good all through the winter and in the rainy season. I have put them through some severe corners and they've not lept off the tarmac yet. You could argue that I've not pushed them hard enough though... :)

I run mine at 33-34psi at the front. Even at stock psi the sidewalls on the F1 look visibly thicker than the Contis.

!8's 18,000K not bad.

I tend to get 18k with 225/45 17's on my elegance tdi on the fronts and about 36 on the rears

Well they are Michelins and cost £150 each!! 'spose you get what you pay for.

(240/25/18)? No wonder only 8,000 miles with that (25) profile. :eek:

Ultrac Sessantas - good move! I'm running a set in 225/45 17 at the moment; little early to predict mileage/wear rate. Be careful of one point when checking tread depth though; the depth on the shoulders is IIRC 1.5mm LESS than the depth on the central section. Don't get caught out thinking you have excess wear due to camber/caster/tracking. ;)

Why isn't anyone in the habit of switching the front and back tyre every 10,000klm.All four tyres would wear uniformly giving the car more predictable handling.

pretty much the same as mine!...but I have also gone through a front set pilot sport 2's in about the same!!!

I suspect I need to temper my driving style

From new std 18" factory Conti sport 2 lasted about 10k on the front of my vRS.

I replace tyres when they get down to 2.5 to 3mm as the grip seems to go away rapidly past that point, especially in the wet at speed.

Got F1 Asymetric on the front now and these seem a lot better :)

Checked my tread depth this morning and worked out that I'm likely to get 10 - 12,000 miles from my front Ultrac Sessantas.

Now that's around 2/3rd the mileage compared to my Michelins, but they're 2/3rd the price - so even stevens :thumbup:; except that the Ultracs are better in the wet. :D;)

Approaching 9K with the 18" original fit Dunlops and they're at around 4mm, rears are at 6.5mm.

With regards to swapping the tyres around, had a quick chat with the dealership about this and they pointed out instead of having to change 2 tyres you'll be having to change 4 in one hit.

Personally speaking,I don't risk a 30,000 euro car for the cost of two tyres,300 euro,not to mention safety.

I mean what's the point in having two fresh tyres on the front axis and two aged tyres in the back?Wouldn't the car tend to oversteer?This is risky business.

Not at all. As long as the tyres are in good condition and at the correct pressure it won't make a difference. Would you change all four tyres if one was damaged and needed replacing?

In the UK its recommended practice to fit the new tyres on the rear axle, swapping the rear tyres to the front if applicable.

I had all 4 changed at 18K miles, now on 49K and still on the same set. Will soon be needing some new ones, the fronts are nearly gone and the rears are still like new.

No,Iwouldn't change all four.I would change two.
