Speaker replacement (Hatch)

Featured Replies

As we all know, the speakers suck!

I'm looking to do a direct swap for better quality items. So they need to be the same size and fit behind the standard recesses.

Am I right in thinking.....

Front Bass= 168mm

Front Tweeter= 36mm

Rear Bass= 130mm

Rear Tweeter= 36mm

(All 4 Ohms)

Once I know exact sizes I'll get hunting. Anyone else done this?

the stock speakers are actually pretty dam good for standard speakers IF you remove the bass from them, e.g. put a subwoofer in your sound system and a uprated cd player of course :)

I have to disagree with that one. I've added a sub and decent headunit and the standard speakers in my car at least are pooh. I have a pair of Rainbows and a heap of sound deadening to fit when I've got some spare time.

really?? mine are really clear and pretty loud, you have to crank them right up to get them destorted. weird :S

Standard speakers arnt very good, can be made better by sound deadening the outer skin and then removing the plastic liner and sealing the inner skin with sound deadening and applying around the speaker mount to stiffen it up .Will agree the standard hu in a mk1 is useless and puts out about 5w per channel.

seems like there is quite a good choice of speakers in the right sizes then.

Lots of 13cm & 17cm component speakers about, so it'll be easy to sort.

I've got an Alpine HU from my last car, but the display is orange, not green. Might save up for a nice new green Alpine one...

I appreciate that the stock HU is pap, but so are the speakers! The rears just wobble about distorting way too easily!

A sub isnt really my style, I'll just get some quality proper speakers.

Where do you put your subs, so they dont stop you getting to the spare?

Watch out for the speaker/cage depth on the front speakers. The standard ones are really shallow and i believe that a lot of 'normal' replacement speakers may be too deep. (I think i remember reading this on this site somewhere).

I've done something similar to this...

edit: When I say ''done'' I mean ''bought''

i twin subs, so it covers the whole spare wheel, but ive allowd enough power and earth cable so that i can just move the box round to the side and access the spare wheel, ive also made up a custom bracket to hold the box in place, but carry a allen key in my car incase i have to move the box.
