Removing sticky residue from dash

Featured Replies

I've got a sticky mark on the dash where something has previously been attached and I was wondering how best to remove it.

I actually used glass cleaner on my dash to remove the glue leftover from a stick on air freshner.

Probably not the best method, but i didnt want to take the chance of using something strong on the plastic.

I just worked it with a towel cloth.

Virosol / MC2 or even a supermarket orange / citrus spray might do the job.

Lighter fluid maybe (test inocuous area first)

Diluted all purpose cleaner will shift it

I'd try glass cleaner first as well. If no luck, go for an all-purpose cleaner, preferably natural (citrus) based.

If you use something with distillates in it (WD40, lighter fluid etc) you risk marking the plastic. It can often turn white when the plastic reacts with it :(

AG intensive tar remover or servisol label remover.

i was just going to suggest tar remover. ive used it on older cars, never tried it on this soft touch dash that newer cars have yet though.

I think the servisol is safe on the current generation dashes in the MK I and MK II as I've used it on both.

Where would I find servisol?

Also how do I remove external stickers without scratching the paint?

And the same stuff works on paint and windows fine for me.

For the external ones pull away as much of the sticker as you can and spray that stuff under the lifted edges. leave it to work for a few seconds then pull more. It works by breaking down the glue under it. Once the sticker is off spray a little over the glue that is left and wipe with a clean piece of kitchen cloth etc.

I'd wash the car once you're all done and put some polish then wax on those areas.

I've had plenty of stickers on my car before now and have found the easiest (and most gentle) way to remove them is to boil a kettle and either pour directly onto the offending sticker or apply to a cloth to warm the area.

use a hair dryer and some fishing wire to gently soften the glue and then pull them away

That's fine for badges but can't see it working for stickers.

Tesco sells 'Sticky stuff remover' which is quite effective. My favourite is autoglym intensive tar remover, but for plastic I would be inclined to try the stick stuff remover first!

Sorry Eddy i meant in relation to Makefish's post.

As said above id use some all purpose cleaner as its not too harsh as a first step
