Pardon my ignorance but when is the first service on a diesel due? I have checked the book and there is no mention of a 1000/1500 mile job. Is this how it is these days with bench run ins and synthetic oil?

12 months or 10,000 miles or if it is on variable serviceing even longer. The dashboard should let you know in either case.
