Morning all

I've recently been informed that wax is not much good over the summer months as it tends to break down when left in direct sunlight, and we are better off with a sealant through the height of summer. Is this widely accepted or shall I ignore it?

I currently use Collinite 915 which I settled for after trying various other waxes. I'm very pleased with the results, although I highly doubt it would last the advertised 6 months :P So, so I need to be looking for a sealant? If so, which one? I have some Autoglym extra gloss protection but it doesn't seem to agree with my stickers (see avatar)... I tried it once and ended up with a green cloth so I haven't used it since :eek:

Whilst I'm trespassing in the detailing section I thought I would also ask about shampoo. I was recently reading about an S4 which had been detailed and the owner had been given some 'soap free' shampoo which would apparently not strip any wax off. Any ideas what that may be? I currently use Autoglym shampoo and conditioner which I prefer to the Meguiars alternative which I tried. Whilst the AG cleaner is good, I do feel it's stripping some wax off even when used as a very weak mix. Any ideas? :P

Do you just wax it every few months then?

I'm still confused on the rules about how often you should wax a car.I normally do it after every wash.

Just done an Autoglym wax then the Extra Gloss.Surprised it did that to your stickers!

(Despite all my effort grey cars still don't look any cleaner than when dirty!)

I tend to wash once or twice a week and then wax every couple of weeks. I use a detailing spray after washes to give the shine a bit of a lift

I see no reason why you can't wax as often as you like, it's polish you need to be careful with.

Since turtlewax from the 70's was boasting death valley tested, I think I'd be inclined to call bullsh*t.

That plus carnuba is to from leaves found in Brazil, where it tends to get a bit warmer than here.

Warm weather doesn't strip wax. Neither does warm water (not over 30 degrees anyway).

Collinite 915 is good for six months if a) applied correctly and the paintwork is prepared properly to receive it, i.e. polish, glaze and sealant.

Most modern shampoos won't remove wax, they are detailing friendly. A heavy degreaser will though.

Clay bar, polish & wax mine every 6 months.

First session is around March/April for the summer months, second session is around September/October for the winter months.

I use Collinite 476 wax & that lasts 6 months. Also use Prima Slick detailing spray every once in a while.

As mentioned above, most decent shampoos are wax friendly & won't strip the wax.

I've tried a few brands & found Megs Gold Class to be the best all rounder.

i wash it once a week to once a fortnight, give it a quick spray with AG wetwax stuff just to get rid of the water marks and give it a quick wax and once a month or once every other month a quick coat of collinate. every six months i strip it all and do a resin, sealant, new wax.

Im probably being a bit OTT but I top the wax up at every wash almost, only takes half an hour more.

I find that some waxes tend to lighten the paint over the summer months, especially if you bought at the lower end of the market.. I have teflon coated my last few cars, handy when its your part time job, ( sorry for being a mr smug) now what used to take hours to achieve takes 20 mins, no shampoo and no waxing. will post photo's soon..
