Bio Fuel Added To Fuel From Tomorrow

Featured Replies

I have just read about this on Yahoo! We are all going to be using biofuels whether we want to or not as part of the Renewable Transport Fuels Obligation. This basically means that fuels will include at least 2.5% biofuel rising to at least 5% by 2010

The story can be found here Biofuels To Be Added To All UK Petrol - Yahoo! News UK

I may have misread the article but I'm sure this is to cover both petrol and diesel.

Will probably just be a blend of biofuel - ie blending in a percentage. Quite common on the continent - this isnt the same as running 100% bioderv though for example

Last chance to fill up with the real deal and avoid the envitable price hike !

The articles I've seen say all fuels are going to be modified i.e. Petrol and Diesel.

Does that include the petrol version of V power ? :thumbdwn:

And can the modern generation of Skodas use it without modification ?

Apologies if this topic has already been done to death - I'm afraid I haven't spotted it yet.

I was under the impression there was already a small percentage of biofuel in tesco fuel? I might be wrong though . . .

not heard a thing on this yet!!

Oh deep joy, im getting sick of changing injectors and fuel pumps on trucks at work, due to numnuts filling with bio fuel, when their trucks wont run on it

My message is, get it in writing from the dealer that your engine can use it

not heard a thing on this yet!!

Nor me

I thought that PD engines couldn't use BioDiesel?

I don't know the answer to that, but in Australia Shell produces "V Power Racing" which is 100RON and 5% bio. Maybe we'll get this eventually?

Yes they can - check your Owner's Manual for details and standards.

AFAIK the newer CR diesels can't.

its only going to be a small percentage so wont effect many cars imoa.

the warnings about using bio fuels is mainly to stop people using large percentages of it then wnodering why their fuel filters stop working lol

Just seen this :

BBC NEWS | UK | Petrol must now include biofuels

Now, i know that you can't run the Fabia VRs on biofuel - do you think being forced to use it from today will damage the PD engine?

If it does cause problems you know whats to blame and could take the fuel supplier to the courts?

i think as its such a small amount, and will be made under strict conditions, as with all fuels on the forecourt, that it wont matter much.

but sod it im off to the chippy to get their waste oil!

I think it's only PD Octy IIs that aren't permitted to run on biofuel. If you look in your Fabia service schedule, it actually has an entry for fuel filter replacement every 10k for cars running on biodiesel. Mine's been running on Tesco cheapo diesel (with 5% biodiesel, apparently) for over three years without any issues...

It's not a problem whatsoever - and I doubt that even on Mk2 PDs it is a problem as they are sold in The Netherlands, where they do have this kind of blend too.

They cant run on 100% though for definite, and I guess the Mk2 PD Octy is not going to be too happy about relatively large percentages of bio into that mix though, who knows

Thanks for the replies, only way to find out for sure is fill up (again!).

I wonder what effect this will have regarding the smooth running of engines , will it be better or worse , or no change? Also what effect will this ahve on older engines , especially those 'born' during the 4 star age?

2.5% Bio fuel in all fuels by law from today (I wonder what the score is for garages that are part way through their tanks , will they be exempt , or will they have had the stuff in for weeks without saying anything??) 5% Bio fuel from 2010. I wonder how , if at all , this will effect how engines run , especially older cars from the 'leaded' era.

You won't have any issues running a e3 VRS or a e4 VRS on anything up to 25% Bio (More if it's warmer).

It is possible to run newer PD's on it too although there is some evidence to suggest it can cause problems with the DPF and in extreme cases cause oil thinning. However pump bought diesel cut with 5-10% Bio is no problem. It's been cut like that in France for years. This could be why it's not "permitted". It's not "permitted" on the 57 Roomster 1.9tdi but it runs just fine

You will have to change your fuel filter more though. I run anywhere between 20 and 50% and I have to change it every 10k.

None of them will run B100 (100%). You wont get it started.

It's fine on 5%.

If youve been to France or IIRC filled up at some supermarkets you were already running it anyway.

If you are worried run the "new" fuel for a couple of months then do a fuel filter change to capture any crud pulled out of the tank

Should be fine, bryand used a very high % bio, might have been 100% even although I'd rather not put words in his mouth lol - as on the continent a blend has been normal for ages, I wouldnt expect much trouble :)

From France I'd say the idle etc is all a bit smoother when using blended.

i think most have been adding it for the past couple of months so they can get it correct.

Are there any car engines out there that state Biofuel must not be used? What about my V6 TDi. I;ve no idea if it works with the stuff
