Induction Kit vs Panel Filter

Featured Replies

Also I've been reading lots of stuff on this site about induction kits and replacement air filters. I'm very tempted to replace the filter, more for a bit of extra induction noise than the power

What I can't find is a comparison of the benefits of a free flow filter versus a full induction kit. Obviously a filter is an easier fit, and the induction kit looks much cooler. But how will the dealer regard me pulling the airbox out of a new car? How much difference does it make to the engine sound? Does the induction kit sound louder/better?

German, Swedish & French are just around the corner from me in Leeds and they do the full 57i induction kit for 76 + VAT.

It might have to wait a month or two though 'cos the wife might object now she's seen the amount of the monthly payments

My view only but it's horses for course mate. Both might show you small gains in power alone but I would say the induction kit my be a little better if you have any other mods due to the diameter of the pipe feeding the kit would noramlly be larger than the standard airbox feed thus allowing more air into the engine, more air + fuel means more power.

Alot of people like the induction kits as it provides extra eye candy under the engine bay as well as sounding louder.

If you have a standard car why bother with an induction kit unless you like eye candy, just go for the panel filter IMHO.

Panel filter will make almost zero difference to the sound, induction kit will make it definitely louder, depending on the make. I think the popular ones in order of loudness are Dynatwist, ABD, Carbonio.

I have a Green panel filter and have found it does make the engine breathe slightly better, but no difference in noise (which is fine with me btw).

Either could invalidate your warranty, but then I don't have a warranty any more anyway.

Just make sure that if you fit an induction kit you have a decent cold air supply to it as otherwise it will just be taking in hot air from the engine bay which will not improve performance! :D

I went for the Green panel filter as it was the right price at the right time (I believe there's a group buy going on as we speak :))

Panel filter will make almost zero difference to the sound,

Due to the fact that since I fitted my K&N panel filter I have had loads of comments...mainly of people who are not that clued up saying things like..."av ya fitted a bigga turbo, sniph???", I would say it does.

I thought it made a small difference, but due to the comments would say it is more noticable than one would think it would be!!!

Yes but comparing yours with (say) Monkeyboy's at the Sprint Cup meet his is 20 times louder than yours, and I don't remember yours sounding that different from any standard car (which you told us yours was - you didn't reveal this sneaky mod!!! )

but then MonkeyBoy is clinicly insane and only buys mods that either look totally bling or make more noise than the human ear can deal with...

i'd agree with everything above, the induction kit will make things louder but you WILL have to install some cold air feeds from the front of the car otherwise its a waste of time due to massively increased heat soak from the engine bay.

the panel filter is a quick way to improve filtration and airflow over the standard filter and shouldnt increase noise too much.

I did mention to FunkyJ that I had a panel and DV, to which he said that it was standard compared to the big boys with maps......what's 3 or 4 bhp between Briskodians?!?! :D

I suppose the sound is in the ear of the beholder, should we say??? I can notice a difference to the OE filter, certainly adds to the grin factor at full bore...if it's at all possible to stretch my mouth anymore. :D

I do plan to mod the car at some point in the future. But I think for now I will have a look at the group buy on the Green panel filter. I need to wait at least 12 months before I do any serious engine mods, such as chipping. And when I do that I'll look at the induction kits, turbo inlet pipes etc :-)

Listen to me - I haven't had the car a week yet!

I bought & fitted a Carbonio kit a few weeks ago. It did improve responsiveness, that is not in doubt.

But, It sounded louder than I wanted, (Woaarrrgghh Pssssssht !!!)

I do too many miles for that, so took it off.

For Sale if anybody wants one, PM me.

Hello Rob,

I fitted a Pipercross panel filter a couple of days ago (which I started [and finished!!] a thread about). You definitely hear the standard DV more than before, plus some induction noise although it could not be described as loud at all. Depends what you're after in that respect.

The car seems to pick up a little better, and at

That sounds like just the thing for me - a bit more noise but not so much that SWMBO objects!

Induction kit can wait 'til there's less warranty left.

I've put my name forward for the group buy on the Green filters so we'll see how that goes.

I fitted the carbonio kit last weekend and the forge dv07. I can't really tell any difference in perfomance but then I didn't expect to. It makes all the right noises, a much deeper throaty growl, especially low down in the revs. It does make people turn there heads. :D

I'm also thinking of getting a replacement panel filter for my octavia vrs but i'm not sure which one to get. Pipercross, K&N or green? Any ideas? I don't want too much extra noise though, i like to be fast but discreet! Also, anyone know of any good, cheap websites for octavia bits? I've looked at a couple of different sites for the Pipercross panel filter and they both give a different model number PP1389 and PP1374! anyone know which it should be? Also to confuse matters even more my local road and rally shop said they called Pipercross and they say they don't make a panel filter for the Octy vrs??!!

Thanks.

Green Cotton Panel Filter seems to be a popular choice and is less oily than the K+N item so will be much less likely to destroy your MAF. No idea about the Pipercross - assumed they only did the induction kit :)

Hi Gang,

So who has fitted an induction kit to their Fab VRS?

1) Has everyone gone for the green panel filters?

I have a BMC carbon intake that fits perfectly onto air intake manifold, just where the airbox sits now. During my little "see if it fits" session, it went on perfectly, sounded excellent and I have cold air feed straight to it (from an old track car project).

2) Will a big increase in air have a good/bad effect on the MAF and general running?

3) Has anyone else used the offside blanked off intake for brake cooling or additional air intake to engine?

Questions for those who can't leave well enough alone...

have the best of bothe worlds at a fraction of the cost.

install a panel filter, drill a few holes on the wing side of the air box and fit a cold air feed to the front of the box(another larger hole in the front of the box)panel filter gets lots of cold air inthrough the cold air feed and the holes make for a nice throaty growl.

not sure with warranty you'd want to drill holes in yer box, worked a treat on my 16v ibiza and cordoba's,negligable gains but throttle response was deffinatley better

I have just fitted a green panel filter to my vRS and it has made it a bit more responsive at the bottom end with a very very slight increase in noise. Got it from Geoff Falkes wheels at ibstock was in the day after I ordered it :)

So has anyone fitted an induction kit to their Fab VRS?

What about Techie - surely his machine has every whizz bang addition?
