Hi mate, just keep an eye on the wear. It does come on early as a warning. Its an easy task and I'm willing to help if you need it, only did my rears a few weeks ago, front are the easier.

I wouldnt recommend letting it wear to the metal though, make sure there is some friction material between the pad and disc.

If you after something good and cheap, I use the mintex sets off ebay.

have a quick check of your pads now to check that they are wearing evenly. The sensor is only on one pad, so the other 3 pads might be a in better or worse state. I changed mine about a month lafter the indicator came on, mainly due to lack of time to do the job rather than anything else.

I left mine about 2 weeks... got the pads out and there probably 3 thousand miles left in the lowest (have a look on your new pads how high the brake wear indicator was set. I used genuine pads and was suprised how high they set it... You can see atleast one pad on each side by turning the car on lock and just looking through the alloy. Keep an eye on it.

If your changing the discs and the pads then no, there would be no permenant damage running them to the metal... but due to brake efficiency I wouldn't advise leaving it metal till metal.

When you change them make sure you let them bed in properly for a good distance - effects braking for the lift of the discs if you over cook them, don't wanna warp them. (made this mistake on my vectra oops),

Oh yeah, and use a decent cleaner to clean the protective stuff off your new discs.

what sort of price should i pay for disks and pads allround

i went to my local trade stockist and they quoated me £110 all in but they must be rubbish i know they werent geunine parts

does any one know of any decent makes that would fit a 4x4 octavia any any prices not sure if the disks and pads are the same as a VRS

changed mine the other da and the sensor had come of the pad! the insides on mine where worn a lot more than the outside pads and the discs where in bad shape on the inside.

personally there the only thing that stopping you from flying into hedge so id change them asap.

you can get some discs from vwspares a lot cheaper than anywhere else i found. £45before VAT iirc for a set of 312mm discs.

When my pad light came on I checked them disconnected the wire and then did about 3k more, but probably could have done 5- 10k as they were pretty pessimistic. Better safe than sorry I guess, although the cynical part of me thinks maybe they sell more pads?

just don't rely on the pad sensor to make any assumptions about pad condition!!

I've recently changed mine and the pad with the sensor in was the best of the 4 and wasn't yet showing the light on, but two of the other pads were down to 1mm of material.

So if you're going to "keep an eye on them" you will need to check all four independently (as you should on a regular basis anyway)

thats another question i have i phoned a local place to get a price and they said for the year and model there are two different sizes for the front and the back can any one help

Fronts should be 288x25 and the rears are 239x9 if i remember correctly for all mk 1 4x4's after 2000.The front pads are the same as a vrs ,rears are 4x4 only.
