Rust already!

Featured Replies

Just noticed today that my Octavia is rusting on both sides inside where the doors close against! unbelievable, its a late 2004 car. Just wondering if any of you have had this?

Can you post some pics? Have you caught the seat belt against the door jam and cracked the paint?

Okay took a quick snap although its not great it should still show whats going on, its the same on the other side except the paint has lifted and is rusting rather than bubbling.

Thats quiet an odd place for rust to develop.

That is odd.

On both sides?

I dont think even my 10yr old Felly has rust there.

Send a picture of it to Skoda UK and they should investigate and fix as they have a 10 year bodywork guarantee. I think

+1

Just take it to your dealer and get it sorted under warranty.

yeah i think im going to have to, its going in to have the turbo fixed too (sticky vanes) so i guess they will be happy for me to point that out too . I have quite a list now, i must say im disappointed with the car so far because of these probs. :(

is it still under warranty then? its over 3 years old.

AFAIK paint and bodywork is much longer than 3 years usually. As long as it's "obviously" a build defect and no self inflicted.

You need to check the fine print in your handbook - I recall perforation warranty etc.

Daz pd,

You say that you have sticky turbo vanes, how does this show up? I think my 2.0tdi may have a similar issue as I have an abrupt change in power delivery at about 2k.

Paintwork is 3 years rust from under the paint (perforation) is 10.

The paint has gone there so I'm not sure it would be covered. :(

I was horrified to see some paint bubbling (rust underneath?) on my two year old Octavia.

Could anyone tell me if this is likely to be a big job to fix?

I'll post a picture in a minute.

That looks like water has got underneath the protective strip attached to the bodywork. The strip can be replaced or removed all together.

my old L&K did the same, not rust but worn down to the primer where the rubber door seals contacted with the metal. dealer wasnt interested in fixing when I asked about it as they said the grit that builds up on the rubber hadnt been washed off! Needless to say I clean the rubber around the doors whenever I wash the car now. Its more of a deign flaw if you ask me but your dealer may be better than mine.

Have you had the car from new and know its history?, otherwise it could be in area of a previous repair.

Thanks Manny so you think it's nothing to worry about?

It's on the nearside rear quarter and the outlined piece runs down and then along the bottom of the car so I thought to remove it could be a big job. Then the respray etc could make it expensive.

Hi Fordfan,

no, I've not had it from new (only one year) so yes, you may be correct and this could be an area of a previous repair. Is there any easy way to tell and does this mean that all the underneath area could be rust waiting to come through the paint?

Thank you both for your replies.

The lines show the external edge of the sticker, if you can heat it slightly it should just peal off. Start where the water has ingresed under the sticker as that should be a good starting point.

To the previous poster, if you look closely at the picture you will see where the bubble effect ends extactly inline with the edge of the sticker. Rust would continue past this to the edge of the arch. What you are seeing are 2 air bubbles under the sticker.

Possibly been in a prang, and had sill work?

just seen this thread was bumped up, basically the little bubbles in my doors had come from dirt on the rubbers rubbing away the paint.

hadnt realised your post was so old! did the dealers sort it for you in the end?

unfortunately not, they said it was because the previous owner musnt have cleaned around the doors, so nothing they could do, I couldnt be bothered to pursue it at the time.

shame but that was the same comment with mine. funnily enough the previous owner was skoda so go figure!

How does cleaning around the doors create rust:confused: Unless one uses a wire brush:rolleyes: Does cleaning the rest of the paintwork cause rust?

Sorry, I get really wound up with the excuses dealers use to get out of warranty repairs.

the rubber door seals that come into contact with teh car body can wear the paint out over time if you dont clean the mud/grit off them. it then ends up with a line of primer on the body which will eventually wear down to metal and thus rust. Its more of a design fault as I see it or you should be warned when you buy the car to always clean the rubber when washing the car (I always do now from bitter experience!)
