Was browsing Kwik fit website and it suggests BridgeStone and Goodyear run flat tyres are compatible with the Octavia wheel size - 205/55v16

Other than price what do you think the pro's and con's are of using them?

Has anyone actually used them, either on the Octavia or other vehicle?

I have run flats on my 1 series and they are a ride wrecker. The Octavia will not be set up for these very hard riding tyres and you will need to keep a Chiropractor on retainer if you could fit these tyres. Which I doubt you can as you should need special rims to put them on too. I haven’t heard of any way round this as yet.

You can only fit run-flats if you have a tyre pressure monitoring system. However a far as wheels they will fit on standard alloys - they are a fair bit harder than normal tyres though, so if you find your ride hard or firm then they may not be to your taste.

The ones that BVMW use will not fit ordinary wheels as the rims will not keep the tyre in place at speed. I didn’t know anyone did them to fit standard rims, must say I am very surprised they fit safely.

They are also very very difficult to get onto a rim, so it's important to check your rims before and after fitting.

Nope BMW wheels are designed for run-flats (,ind you they only do run-flats on the 1 series). There is a diagram somewhere showing how the rim is different for Run Flats. I think the lip is slightly taller and the inside has a slightly different profile.

I seriously doubt you can put run-flats on normal cars and expect them to be very safe if they run flat.

I have had a bit of a trawl and can’t find the diagrams showing subtle differences between standard rims and run-flat ones. I do remember seeing cross sections of BMW rims when they first came out. BMW recommend that you use the correct rims for run-flats however and have also (allegedly:rofl:) adjusted their suspension settings to take into consideration the 40psi approx of pressure they have in them. Also, theoretically, your insurance company should be informed if you change to this type. Also, don't forget you need a specialist to fit them if you want your rim left intact.

Either way the tyres basically toast, so why pay the extra cost?

I'm 100% sure you can put run flats on normal cars as I was speaking to a few major tyre places and even one of the manufacturers stated they did versions that were designed to go on standard rims.

I was considering if they were worth it at the time, but decided they were not for the reasons you gave.

They are much stiffer, but IIRC some are made.

I have already had a puncture and only done 7K miles. The dealer bodged a repair till had the tyre replaced (yes I know it was naughty).

Autocar wondered about replacing the run-flats on their 135, but were told they could not, as the rim is specific to run flats i.e. it has a different profile.

I personally would not have them if they weren’t standard when I got the car. Besides if you add them to an ordinary car you then get into the trouble with spring/damper rates being all wrong, the tyres potentially are heavier which affect the unsprung mass and there are 2 schools of thought as to whether they are more fuel efficient and offer better grip in the wet, or just the opposite. They do save the weight of an extra spare wheel however:D
