Cost of replacing thermostat

Featured Replies

Hi Guys,

Over the last few days my thermostat has gone (I think), my car has been having bizarre blower performance (kicking out hot air when its on cold) and now the engine temp never gets to the right level and seems to drop once it hits a set point. oh and my fuel economy is about 15% down.

ANYHOO,

I've booked it in at the local Skoda dealers service centre (Hull) on Tuesday; could do with an early indication of what it might cost me if anyones had the same issue?

Many thanks

Tim

A clue to what engine you have may help.

oops, sorry - you're right.

Its the 1.4 8V MPi Engine.

I would think about an hour to fit. Probably about £100 + parts.

Ok, thanks for the help.

I'm now totally confused as to wether I actually need the work doing. Basically, my car used to get up to its normal op. temp (i.e. middle of the gague) and stick there, recently its been taking a lifetime to get to that temperature (its 7 miles to my work and often doesnt get to that temp), but seems to get to the temp quicker if its sat in traffic.

Am i right to think the thermostat needs doing or am I grumbling about nothing? I'm concerned that the car might overheat, blow a gasket, or more importantly drain my fuel efficiency!!

Thanks again for help with this; as you can probably tell I know next to bugger all about cars!

Yep thermostat. My A4 Avant did the same. New stat and everything is fine.

Motorway journeys the temp would only hit about 75C. But sat in town it would go to 90C as normal. Fuel eco. was down as well.

I changed the stat myself on mine. But thats because of the age of the car and the cost if a garage did it.

i have a 1.4 8v MPI it seems really easy to fit. i need mine doing. just need to get hold of the part. i need the whole housing as well as the thermostat insert. it just attached with self tappers

If your changing the whole housing then you remove by the two 13mm nuts behind.

If you are getting the thermostat replaced, I think it is worth getting the whole housing replaced. I'm sure I've read elsewhere on this forum that it is prone to cracking of something - probably worth doing a wee search.

I had the whole thing replaced on mine (Thermostat Housing) to cure the symptoms you describe. The part was only £31.42 + VAT , part number 047121111S. The car has ran fine ever since.

You can get the housing and sensor as a pack, I gather, and it's worth doing both to kill two birds with one stone!

If you fancy trying it yourself, I did a technical guide for replacing just the sensor, here. It, plus the other instructions folks have posted should see you right. You should be able to do it without losing masses of coolant, however you may want to do a full drain-and-refill...

Good luck!
