Tyre choice?

Featured Replies

I need to put 4 new tyres on my 1.9 Tdi Elegance, 2001 Y reg, which has now covered 107000 miles. For the last 2 years I have used Goodyear Eagle F1 GSD 3's which have been excellent in every respect except on the front wheels this time round have only lasted 17000 miles. I have driven more conservatively as the diesel price has gone up and up over the last few months, so this is disappointing. On black circles dot com I can get 4 of these 205/55/R16's for £287.84 fitted. However, I am considering putting 4 Michelin Primacy HP's on which will cost £332.60 fitted. Question is, is it worth the extra for the Michelin's? I know I will be sacrificing grip in the wet and perhaps more susceptibility to aquaplaning, but these days I drive much more carefully(showing my age!). I would like to know if anyone has any experiences/opinions on the Michelin tyres compared to the Goodyears?

If you drive conservatively then why are you wasting your money on premium tyres? If the cost of fuel is enough to make you drive slower then just buy something like Falken or Kumho instead. These tyres are more than capable of keeping you on the road in all seasons and you will save about £120 over the Michelins.

the last set of michellin primacy sports on my octavia elegance had lasted approx 35,000 miles. mainly done on the motorway and I found the grip and preformance great no matter what the weather. Well worth the extra money IMHO

After much thought and deliberation, I've decided to try 4 Kumho KU31's which via black circles dot com have cost me £234.56. When the two front tyres are worn out, if they have been good I will continue with them, if not I will try 2 Michelins and look for the 30000 mile plus tyre wear! Thanks for your advice, much appreciated. This will be my first time for using black cirlces dot com instead of my tyres dot co dot uk. Black Circles just seems more convenient.
