High pitch whine on startup

Featured Replies

Most mornings when I start the car from cold (Problem does not occur after car has been on a run and stopped then started)

I get a high pitch whine thought it was coming from the front of the car, but after I changed my number plate lights last night and checked they were working this morning I heard the noise more from the back end of the car.

Any suggestions or pointers, my thinking was maybe something to do with fuel filter? or fuel pump?

Thanks in advance :)

EDIT: Forgot to add it's an 02 plate Octaiva VRS

might be the fuel pump maybe? On my 306HDi I could hear the fuel pump, but only when I was outside the car and generally that was once I had turned the engine off and got out - it ran for a few seconds after engine.

Sounds like it could be the aux drive belt slipping but it maybe the starter sticking

Sounds like the secondary air pump,as this only runs when engine cold, and as it blows air into exhaust could be heard at the rear of car?. If you search there is a link on here somewhere to the mk1V golf forum that has a pictorial on how to easily fix it.

Sounds a good place to start looking

skospares are a bit cr@p at replying to emails though, so you might be best off phoning them.

Thanks for the replies, was chatting to someone in work this morning about this and he also suggested secondary air pump, I have seen the howto before so will start my problem solving there first I think, here's where I miss having a driveway though, just makes things 10 times harder to do on road!
