1.4 16V (Petrol) - but not so you'd know!

Featured Replies

My 2004 16V 1.4 Petrol Engine is great. But sounds distinctly dieselesque on start up  Have any other forum members had this? Even my neighbours have asked when I got my new diesel motor!

Is it a chain driven engine instead of a Drive Belt?

I've got a 2000 1.4 8v, which has a chain and can sound rather diesel like at times. Whats the Millage?

Whilst you don't need to change a chain, I have heard that it can help when the car sounds loud.

A bit of clatter for a few seconds is normal as the hydraulic tappets pump up, but any more than that is worrying. How lous and how long is the question here.

The 1.4 16v will be belt driven

But if its noisy that will be worrying?

Has it had any services/belt changes recently?

Our 2001 1.4 16 V Auto is the same, very noisey at start up and yes sounds like a diesel.

It's been like that from new and has just completed 13000 miles

In the first four years it did 3456 miles!

The car had a new cam belt at 48K as a condition of sale. The car has a full service history. It runs fine. It just sounds like a diesel car until its completely warm. When I put my foot down a bit then it actually sounds (IMHO) really nice.

Mine does that too for about 3 seconds and then clears up. Other than that it is fine.

Dear lord, I did that in the first 5 months.

That's normal, as you suggest. Our Lupo 16v does it. In fact, so does the Fabia vRS, but you can't always hear it over the diesel clatter. Much more than that and you may have a problem.
